Recently we saw three posters close their accounts over disagreements in the dairy threads. While there is a lot of frustration and discontent with current milk prices and the processing industry, the recent tendency for dairy threads to become tit-for-tat arguments isn’t tolerable for those not involved.

All farming sectors go through difficult periods and during such times there may need to be changes in how threads are moderated.

Dairy threads are going to be more closely monitored and subject to stricter moderation for a while.

To that end we won’t tolerate baiting of posters, constantly reviving old arguments, posters with agendas or crusading for a cause.

Whether it’s discussion of the business or politics of the dairy or other sectors, we expect civility and tolerance toward each other and other opinions as diversity of opinion is needed as a source of different ways of looking at a situation.

Also please be aware that what you may post as light-hearted banter can be read totally differently by someone adversely affected by the subject matter and evoke a reaction you hadn’t intended.

The ‘Off-Season’ forum, and its anonymous posting, is available for anyone to chat about their situation.

I was wondering would it be a help if we posted our milk prices. I would hope that if someone is low that help could be given, on the other hand if high perhaps your tips could help us all.

I would suggest posting your processors base inc Vat for comparison
Post your Nett price for others to help or be helped
I think that solids should be included.
I suggest any seasonal/liquid contract price be excluded or seperated.

I feel that we as farmers do a lot of bitching about processor prices and rightly so IMO. I also feel that we should not worry about it as we can do nothing about base price but we certainly do something about it at farm level.

What do you all think?

I thought Ballytore did all glanbia's liquid milk and Ballyragget.I didn't know they had a production operation in Drogheda still,with 129 employees :eek: That was hardly cartoning milk was it?
I'd agree with shutting it,if it was and centralising at Ballytore or ragget,that's in all our interests.
They are still hiring farm advisors/sales people so those positions should be safe.

Ballytore and Drogheda are the liquid operations. Ballyragget does no liquid what ever. It is a purely manufacturing site.

Regardless ,one efficient plant and no milk price subsidizing superfluous facilities is good for farmers.

existing dual suppliers must feel that they will have some degree of leverage post 2015..

FMP have a pool of liquid milk and obviously enough a pool of surplus too... with the administration in place and a big membership are they in a position of strenght.. glanbia plc have a finite agreement to take liquid milk suppliers milk btw

42.5c/l inc. vat. 3.51p 3.92bf Dairygold. Current milk is holding well at 18l @ 3.8p 4.15bf with the rest of the autumn calvers to be dried of this week so expecting yield to rise slightly and solids to fall slightly. Will continue to feed 2kg 14% hi maize ration to spring calvers to hold yields on the later calvers and any roll overs i'll milk on, and to slow down the rotation a bit. No fresh calvers yet bar 2 heifers that decided to "hit the town" last year without permission about 10 mths ago:rolleyes:

Straw won't do much for your solids Kev bar adding a bit of fibre to compensate for the lush grass.itll rise your fat a bit but do nothing for protein.milk solids is about 55% breeding and 45% feeding if I remover correctly from talking to my nutritionist .i reckon your cows just aren't getting enough energy in their diet.grass on its own wont give high solids in most scenarios.try introduce 2 kg of a hi maize nut but this may not suit as your tight on quota.x breeding is no quick fix for low solids.it will take a few years before it really kicks in.have a look at your ebi report and see what your p and bf figures are and work from there when breeding.what are ur solids and yields like.mine still pretty good 22.3 Ltrs 3.74 protein and 4.06 fat.

If your caught by quota you could be limited in the short term to do whole lot for it, should rise away as lactations progress at least. Mahoney_j's breeding advice is good in the long term, I also use the milk recording sheets to have physical data on the actual cow as well as the ebi values when matching cows to AI

Kev from your posts I take it your over quota. Normally energy is helpful but may drive you too close or over the edge.
Could you take this opportunity to go through your records and deal with any under performers. There is no silver bullet I'm afraid. At this time of the year xbreds don't really give any mojor advantage over other well bred and managed cows. Where they win on solids is that their low is much higher than the others giving a higher overall % for the year

cell count gone up last collection, tested 9 suspects this morning. Found one with a start, probably her. Thats for going off to a stag, phone gone, cellcount up and sore head

last result was 17th, scc was 300, i milk recorded and took out 2 highest cows... wanted to see if scc had come down, a week is a long time without a result, then maybe no news is good news
