RTE needs a serious rebranding and a major shuffle in presenters. TV3 can operate on a very small budget then so can RTE. Pack of gimps...crap stations crap presenters

"The second highest paid broadcaster in 2011 was Pat Kenny on €630,000. His latest contract is up for renewal this year.

Marian Finucane was paid €492,000 in 2011 and her fees have nearly halved to €295,000 in her new deal.

Joe Duffy was paid €378,000 in 2011, reduced by 20% to €300,000 in his latest contract.

RTÉ says it has reached its objective of cutting presenter pay by at least 30% since 2008. It also says it has agreed increased levels of annual broadcast output with a range of presenters.

Miriam O'Callaghan received €307,000 in 2011, dropping to €211,000 in her latest contract.

Brendan O'Connor was paid €228,500 in 2011, reduced to €158,000 in his latest agreement.

Derek Mooney was the seventh highest paid in 2011 on €220,000.

Broadcaster Sean O'Rourke was paid nearly €209,000 in 2011.

George Hamilton received nearly €203,000 that year, dropping to €168,000 in his new contract.

Bryan Dobson was paid just under €198,000 in 2011.

Mr Mooney, Mr O'Rourke and Mr Dobson are employees rather than contractors so new contract fees are not applicable to them. Their figures also include pension contributions"

I'd agree a lot of them are overpaid but even if you halved their wages it wouldn't put much of a dent in a €65 million deficit.
Seems to be much bigger problems than wages.Maybe paying for programmes nobody wants to watch and putting them on at all hours of the night might be a start.

i never got that! they must be paying a fortune for syndicated shows which are prime time in the US and UK and they show them at midnight or something on RTE

I think they need a shake up at the director level. They seem to be a "jobs for the boys" agency reminiscent of the FF era(although i don't think they current government are doing anything to fix this). If they are bringing in this new licence fee to fund RTE, i want to see them shake up the agency also

Being from Northern Ireland I feel the same about the bloated fat cats at the BBC. They should finance themselves like the other tv companies or get out of the business.

The BBC have little to offer in today's society that can't be provided elsewhere. Ditch the fee and let them see how well loved their programmes really are.

The apparent covering up of the amount of wrongdoings by its presenters going back decades was the final nail for me.

Why don't they scramble their signal and only allow the license payers to watch it. I would be up for that. I can promise that a large number of people won't pay it to watch the dross at the BBC, despite them spouting all the time about how much value for money they provide. Put your money where your mouth is then BBC.

I read a while ago that RTE would buy the rights for shows it didn't even want and then air them at one or two A.M. just so TV3 couldn't get them. Maybe it's nonsense but if true it goes to show how they'll throw money at anything

I accept that the BBC produces the odd good show. However with the obscene amount of money they extort from joe public it would be surprising if they didn't hit lucky once in a while. They are still going on about the office more than a decade after it stopped Ffs.

As for totp2 and the old grey whistle test interesting to some maybe, but no one would pay much to see those programs nowadays unless out of a passing curiosity.

When the BBC were formed there wasn't an alternative. Now there is and not only that but better alternatives IMO. I love thriller, drama series but almost exclusively the ones I watch are American ones from HBO etc. Any I watch on the BbC its all a bit Meh that's if I can be bothered watching them at all.

As I said if they are really that confident in the world beating programming then they should start subscriptions and or advertising. Surely you should have a choice if you want to pay for the BbC, Sky etc.

Not defending them by any means. However, would it be possible that they buy the rights to air certain shows, but they come with certain conditions, such as airing them at
non prime time? Prob got at reduced price.

They've had other decent American made shows that they air at stupid o'clock in the past.
