This is a forum for people to ask for advice, and in some cases may be experiencing difficult personal circumstances. For some people JobBridge may be a good, and welcome choice for them. Thee is to be no more mention of JobBridge being a scam, fraud, etc (or any discussion among same lines). There may be a home for that kind of discussion on Boards.ie but it definitely isn't here.

Hi Had a letter from Social Protection inviting me to participate on a TUS Programme. I have done an internet search and there seems to be very little "chatter" about it from people who have been on it, does anyone have any experience of it? I know how much it pays and a broad idea of what type of jobs etc, but would like some first hand experience from people in the know. Sounds a bit like a CE Scheme.

I don't think that would make a difference as most of the positions they are forcing people into don't require a whole load of brain function; sweeping the streets, picking up litter etc.

They might as well make us all wear yellow stars whenever we go outside too.

The thing is though you are not even guaranteed that you will be interviewed for a position before it is offered to you.! It really is shocking stuff.

No they haven't. You are placed with a charity / non profit that is local to your community. Most common placement would be in a community center.

I see them every morning wearing yellow high vis jackets bearing the name of the community employment agency. These people are cutting grass, picking up litter etc.,

Well then :
For new participants who started on or after 17 September 2012 the minimum weekly payment for participants (based on 19.5 hours worked) is €208.

If the actual Jobseeker's Allowance (including dependants) you were getting is €188 a week or less, then you will get the minimum Tús weekly rate of €208 (that is €188 plus €20). If your actual weekly Jobseeker's Allowance (including dependants) is €188.01 or more, then you will get the equivalent rate plus €20.

Yeah, a friend of mine was on a reduced payment but when he was called up for tus he started getting 188 plus 20 euro.

It'll be your rate plus €20 per week. Basically if you're on €188 you'll get €208, any less and you'll get that plus €20

thats not true, i was on a reduced rate of JSA, i mean a really small amount and i get the full 208.00. by the way i love my placement, Im gaining invaluable skills and it beats sitting at home in despair depressed all day, i would urge people to try and extract something positive from it.

Saw someone with the hi vis tus jacket this morning, surely there should be some sort of privacy. I know hard to do in a high vis jacket but if it didnt say the words Tus programme on it, people wouldnt pass any notice on it and think they were a council or environmental employee.

That's good to hear. I was told it was your current payment plus €20 a week. Then again, I was already on €188 on JA.

Feel the same about my placement too. It's great when you get somewhere you can gain and build on skills and much better than sitting at home despairing as you send application after application to no avail.

Privacy? Lol what a load of cobblers.....outside of a very small circle nobody would have a clue what Tus stands for, I'd seriously doubt many people did pass notice on it

I wouldn't be happy wearing one, but if had to would black out the name with a marker.

Are they trying to identify people working on menial schemes (well in some areas of schemes) as Prisoners of the State:P

I would say you're wrong, it's all about opinions...

where do you draw the line on privacy...should people not have to sign in the post office for their dole money for fear of being pointed at and ridiculed.....some people just think about things too much is all I'm saying

I think it's six months now as they have just employed 25 new people to try and get the que down. It could be longer than six months though.

Had a interview for the Tus program 2 weeks ago and went really well compared to some of the things I read on here beforehand so said I'd post here and share, might help someone!

The interview was held in my local employment service building, everyone had there own separate time for the interview which was great, was interviewed by a man and women, one went through my CV as the other explained about the program and then I was asked about what I was interested in doing.

I have a degree in IT but unsurprisingly they didn't have anything to suit and they they went through a list of 8 jobs, most of which were grass cutting, maintenance work and one for looking after elderly people. Was asked if any jobs jumped up at me and said no none do and they were very understanding about it and then they advised me on contacting my local employment officer and trying to get a job somewhere IT based for trial work and then they said they would write back to social welfare stating they didn't have anything suitable for me!
All quite so far but you never know what could happen

I finished my placement early about 4 weeks ago now. Finished as I am doing a college course. Here is my experience.

I am very IT oriented and very advanced in the subject. I told them this and that I would not be suitable for minding children or elderly folk or janitorial work. They were fine with this and told me they would let me know if something was available that I would be suitable for.

A week later I got a phonecall. Local community center needed someone with IT skills. I thought great! Went for the interview and everything seemed fine so I accepted a placement there. The first day I was asked to take an inventory of the IT stock. Which I was fine with. I had it done in a few hours. I told the person in charge at the time I was done and I was told to slow down! I was working too fast! I thought to myself okay that is fine maybe they just didn't know how fast I worked and thought it would take longer. I thought maybe I would get better and more challenging work soon.

Well it never came. I was stuck behind reception for I would say 90% of my placement. Answering phone calls and general reception duties. It was about once a week I did anything IT.

I was very annoyed about this and so was my boss from tus (one of the soundest guys I have met in awhile)

Basically in my 4 months with them I learned nothing and feel I was taken for a ride. While it was in no way tus's fault as they have since told me that they will never place anyone in there again.

My advice to people going on tus placement is to make 100% sure of what your responsibilities are when you are taken on and to make sure there is enough work for you and they are not just taking you one because it is free labor!

Other then the lack of work though I had a good time. The people were nice and overall it was a pleasurable experience other than the boredom I would have most of the time as I was idle.

Hi...why so angry? it's 19 hrs a week nothing too draconian....in that time you can still job search and quit the programme should you be successful, might help people understand better if you can explain what else you're up to in that time that's making you so angry not being able to do it

All I can find is a suggestion that one should appear "a bit thick" at the interview!

This is unlikely to influence an employer looking for someone to clean up litter!
