Mother of murder victim Rachel Manning blames innocent boyfriend

This is a notorious case of miscarriage of justice. Rachel Manning's boyfriend Barri White was convicted of her murder and spent 5 years in prison. His conviction was quashed when the BBC program Rough Justice questioned the forensic evidence.
The real murderer was convicted today.

The mother of the victim said: "We believe Rachel would still be with us today if she had not been abandoned by her boyfriend the night she was attacked, killed and brutally battered. We cannot forget that."

Of course the woman has reason to be bitter but instead of expressing regret that Barri White had spent time in prison for a crime he did not commit she still holds him responsible for her death.

Also noteworthy that they managed to convict someone for helping White to cover up a crime. That he didn't commit in the first place.

Her words are very harsh considering what the guy has been through already, but he did abandon her on the night.. and she would very likely still be alive if he hadn't done so.

Easy to say that she's just bitter, but if it was a member of my family killed under such circumstances then I'd say I'd be pretty bitter about it too.

What apparently happened was that they had a row at a party. He went off on his own and she went to get a taxi. That sort of thing happens every night of the week. How could he possibly be blamed if she was then murdered by someone else. Be realistic!

The mother says he abandoned her. But the news report says that she became lost. Does any source confirm what the circumstances of their separation were that night? (EDIT: Roger above confirmed it was a row)

At any rate I would place the blame solely on the murderer, not on anyone else. Otherwise every time someone is mugged/murdered walking alone we would be blaming whoever should've/could've been walking along with them.

I have a lot of sympathy for her, but blaming an innocent man who's spent years in prison after his girlfriend was brutally murdered is a bit disgusting, in my opinion. She might as well blame herself or the father for letting their daughter go out, if she's going to start down that route.

There's only one person to blame, and he's going to jail.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge the mother, as stated she has been through four trials.... I would reckon any person to have to endure all of that, tobe jaded and bitter.. It's a. Same the prosecution did not do the right job n the first place. Horrible situation and hope the perp rots in jail

And what has the boyfriend been through? His girlfriend murdered, he'd naturally feel guilty over not being with her, being arrested and charged for her murder, his name destroyed, his friend arrested for trying to help him, 5 years of his life gone, and now the mother is placing the blame squarely on him?

Being a victim does not give one the right to crap on other victims.

Echoes of that case some months back where a poor guy felt he had no other option but to plead guilty to abusing his niece, turned out the little girls mother had forced her to lie about the abuse.

I am being realistic. I'm not saying she's right to partially blame the guy, all I'm saying is that if I were in her shoes, and had a daughter murdered under the same set of circumstances; then I couldn't say, hand on heart, that I wouldn't be bitter and angry about it too.

Also she did not criticise the police who bungled the case in the first place:

Mrs Manning, a teacher, did not criticise the police and CPS for bringing the first case against Mr White.

I dont think anyone could blame him for the murder of a girl that he had no part of, how can you blame the guy for not being there to help her, like thats like saying if I knew the lotto numbers for tonights draw I would have picked them instead of what I picked, the mother is abviously still heartbroken about her daughters death and looking for someone to blame for the circumstances of her daughters death

I wonder did the mother's opinion of the boyfriend influence the police to such an extent that they believed he was guilty and took shortcuts to convict him. I am just speculating, of course.

I agree to a certain extent, but after the actual murderer, the police have a serious case to answer to.

People might have expected Barri and Keith, now completely free men, to go on to live happy and carefree lives, aided by a fat compensation cheque to set them on their path.

Well, no actually. This was the start of perhaps an even bigger fight than the one to clear their names. Both men have struggled with freedom since their release.

There is no parole and little support when your conviction is quashed. You are simply sent out the door and left to get on with it.

Thats quite shocking indeed.......left to survive/cope on their own and not even any form of mental or financial support from the UK goverment for 5 years wrongly imprisoned in jail.:eek:

I was at an event where Keith was a speaker. He is a very nice guy, but he has had a really tough time and his life is in tatters. As Mt Name is URL says, they got no support at all. Keith had an awful time in prison and has had a really hard time, mentally and socially, since getting released.

When I heard him speak he had not received any compensation, nor was he likely to. Compensation for miscarriages of justice is very hard to get, and this is, I believe, intentional. The legislation that governs when payments can be made has certain requirements.

Typically when a conviction is overruled the way in which it is overruled does not satisfy the requirements for compensation. For example, to get compensation you need to be shown to be innocent. In most cases the best you get is that the conviction is unsafe. As "unsafe" is rather a broad term which covers "technically" innocent (a person that may have committed the crime but gets off on a technicality) all the way to someone who is "factually" innocent (a person that did not commit the crime), compensation is generally not available.

I am hopeful that now someone has been convicted that Keith can move on with his life and hopefully get some compensation. I would expect he will need to go back to court to be declared innocent, and then I would hope he would be entitled to compensation, and I wish him all the best.

In fairness though the guy served 5 years in prison for something he didn't do, I think I'd take that into account and leave the poor guy alone at this stage!
