Everton can confirm that it has received bids from Manchester United for two players. Those bids were immediately rejected out of hand as derisory and insulting.

The Club did not make public these details as it was vital Roberto Martinez’s preparations for the opening game of the Premier League season were not disrupted in anyway.

Begovic is no doubt a very good keeper but i'm always wary of over-egging those sort of performances.

IMO most keepers in the Premier League would look world-beaters when their goal is being peppered non-stop for 90 mins. And if Stoke continue to play like that all season, he'll probably look world class all year.

In truth, whilst Mignolet didn't have that much to do, his double save is far more impressive than anything Begovic did.

It must be difficult for a keeper with big ambitions - you're almost better off playing in a struggling side and looking a world beater than playing in a dominant team with feck-all to do.

Paddy Kenny always springs to mind. He was stunning for Sheffield United in 2003/2004, mainly because their goal was being peppered relentlessly. He got some caps with the national side on the back of it but any time he's stepped up to the top level he's been exposed as a run-of-the-mill shot stopper.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers sensed a different feeling in the Reds dressing room ahead of the Barclays Premier League opener against Stoke in comparison to last season.

Rodgers' team kicked off 2012-13 with a 3-0 defeat at West Brom 12 months ago, but were a changed outfit in beating Mark Hughes' side 1-0 with a performance which deserved more goals.

While aware that feet must remain firmly planted on the ground, the boss revealed there is a special mood of togetherness within the squad he has built.

"I remember last year and people saying to me 'should we be losing 3-0 to West Brom?' They were absolutely right," said Rodgers.

"But we've got better and better as we've gone on. It's a big job here.

"But I just got the feeling in the dressing room beforehand, when the players were getting together, some of our staff were saying that it just feels different this year.

"There's a camaraderie and a togetherness there. Long may it continue.

"We haven't won the World Cup, it's a game of football. But the lads are happy, they've done their job. They knew this was a big three points."

Simon Mignolet and Daniel Sturridge were the match-winners at Anfield with a penalty save and the decisive goal respectively - and Rodgers paid a glowing tribute to the latter for his work ethic.

The Northern Irishman added: "I think the biggest credit you can give him is that in all the time he was off, he never put on any weight whatsoever.

"His body fat remained the same as when he was playing, which shows you how hard he was working.

"And I have to give credit to the medical team, because they've got to make sacrifices as well. Daniel was keen to get himself right, so he was ready to fire at the beginning of the season.

"For a bit of time it was touch and go, but once we saw his progress and how he was working, he was back probably three weeks earlier than what we anticipated, purely because of his attitude.

"I always believe he's got a goal in him. That's why we took him here. As long as he's on the field, he can end up being one of the top goalscorers in this league."

The average Liverpool attempt at goal involved 10-12 moves, the average for Stoke is about 5.

It's Good if we get him, but I'm not Fazed even if we don't. The HM Saga can attest to that, and I'm more Emotionally Invested in that one.

There's always be a Silver Lining. Sometimes, Things has a way of working themselves out in the end. In our case, Sturridge and Coutinho.

Saturday's stunning penalty save to hand Liverpool three points over Stoke was not the first time Simon Mignolet had denied an opponent from 12 yards – but it certainly prompted the loudest reaction.

The Belgian's sprawling save low to his right from Jonathan Walters' spot-kick, and his subsequent reflex stop to keep out Kenwyne Jones, ensured the Reds began a season with victory for the first time in five years.

"The penalty save was an incredible moment because it more or less meant we had won the game," the 25-year-old said.

"It doesn't really happen that a goalkeeper directly secures the points. You can't score goals so for something like this to come around is great and will help my confidence for the next game.

"I saved a penalty in the Tyne and Wear derby and believe me that was loud. But this was more about the moment, my first game as a Liverpool player. It was unbelievable to help out on my debut and I am a happy man.

"You study those things as a goalkeeper. All credit to the guys at the training ground who helped me analyse those things. You have to be lucky that you dive the same way but I was very pleased.

"It was the debut that you dream of. I had hoped to do something like that but you never really think that you will. Saving a penalty in the last minute of your first game for Liverpool is just amazing.

"I've felt at home from the very first moment I arrived here. The way people have treated me has been amazing. When you play your first Premier League game and can do those things it makes it easier.

"I was a bit nervous in the first 15 minutes with it being my debut but this will help me settle and means the next game will be much easier."

Mignolet's heroic moment was required after vice-captain Daniel Agger was penalised for handball in the penalty area, and the Dane later tweeted his thanks to the Reds' new goalkeeper.

But the stopper insisted credit should be given to the whole team: "Daniel had helped us many times before that. You don't keep a clean sheet on your own.

"The whole back four did a magnificent job. Sturridge scored the winner, I saved a penalty. Next week someone else will do something.

"As a team I felt that we did really well and we deserved more than one goal. Asmir Begovic had an unbelievable game for them.

"There is an unwritten law in football that if you play well and don't take your chances, there will be one or two chances for the opposition. I was thinking that the longer the game went on.

"I had a feeling they would equalise in the last minute but luckily it didn't happen. The main thing is that we kept a clean sheet and got three points.

"When the penalty was awarded everyone was thinking we were only going to get a draw.

"It can have a damaging effect if you play well and don't win. But we can now go to the next game relaxed. We can do the same things we have done, rather than feeling anxious that we have to win.

"Winning hasn't happened too often for Liverpool on the opening day of the season in recent years.

"This is very important to set our season off but let's keep our feet on the floor. We have only got three points and scored one goal. Now we have to forget about what happened and concentrate on Aston Villa."

That is something that has been very obvious about him since he joined Liverpool. He is far better when he does something quickly or simply has to react to something, than he is at reading play or when he has the time to look and pick a pass.

He is very very good at following the ball ( not a dig at him in any way either), but is terrible at staying with players who don't have the ball.

He tends to stand off players and not track off the ball runs, but send him after a player running with the ball and he will chase with every bit of effort he can muster. It is why I mused on here last week if he had the potential to play in a similar style to Sven Bender, Lars Bender, James McCarthy etc., in that he could be the type of defensive midfielder who follows the ball and gets a toe poke in rather than a full on tackle. He has the energy/stamina for such a role, and seems to be a dogged ball chaser, but his reading of the game casts some doubts for me.

Nope, I don't think I've ever wrote of a player after 2 pre-season games, hell, I think Borini might get a break this year and not of the injury type! Aspas just seems to have something about him, an intelligent, pacey player and seems skilful enough, which I think might have been a criticism of him before.

Henderson did ok, at least he was getting in those positions and that was some save from the Aspas flick, this season will be a big one for him. I just don't know if he has it in him but he should improve his game with the quality of the front 3 options we have.

One part of Aspas' performance that stood out for me was one moment when a ball that got away from him. He was the wrong side of a Stoke player chasing it, beat him for pace over about ten yards and created a chance. I think that's it at the 2 min mark in the video posted above, but it's sped up so hard to tell.

Do agree that we would need a better player instead of him for games when game intelligence/guile/creativity would be needed from his position. Then again if we do get Willian or a similar type of player for the wide left slot, then Coutinho will becomes the guile/creativity provider and Henderson will go back to being a back up player who can bring great energy to the team coming off the bench.
