You can buy a full x86 Windows tablet with 64GB storage for 100 more. I bought the Asus vivotab and it is an incredible piece of kit for the cash. And having used the surface RT it is actually smoother and faster than its RT counterpart.

Not anything special price wise versus other retailers.

However as I said earlier its a brilliant tablet; I loaded it up with a stack of movies on holiday, worked on a the plane as a movie player kept the kids quiet.

I think there are better tablets out there for that price. Alanstrainor's link seems like a good deal. I already have office on cd and a bluetooth keyboard so I am now considering that

I would be interested to hear how Windows 8 x86 performs on the ASUS and what the battery life is like? Windows RT (which has its critics) is optimized for tablet hardware and runs really well on the ARM processor plus you get 8 hours easily on the RT. The full size USB port is mighty handy aswell.

Atom x86 Vivotab owner here.

Between 8 and 9 hours battery life here. Web browsing and general messing around would be my usage. Plus some work related stuff, none of which would be CPU intensive.

The Atom is smoother than the surface RT I had a play around with in the office last week. The RT seemed to be occasionally jittery when scrolling through menus and the likes in the Win8 metro UI.

I bought a surface rt about 3 weeks ago. I knew what it was and what I did before i got it. As a device its nice, wouldnt be worth 400€ plus so im glad it dropped price. Battery life is great, camera nice, keyboard(virtual) is nice to use. Overall there is some lag, noticeably in skype when you bring up the on screen keyboard or flick from a full screen call to IM's, also has some lag in IE when on the web. Id you have another computer like me and only need it for surfing the net and to bring with you to college its fine.

Would I buy and ipad instead? No, this thing has what I need plus word. Its closer to a 'real' OS which is what I wanted. Plus having an SD card is nice.It may be 32GB but its like 16GB usable for you.

I should say with the Surface RT, out of the box the factory image is old, to get a through feel for it you need to install all the MS updates including the Office preview to full update; initially this is time consuming however on completion you have a different device. Most display units have not been updated.

Agreed, with the surface not updated you have loads of lags and buggyness. updates take a nice while to install also since theres so many

BIG changes on this scheme:

The purchasing of both the Surface RT and Pro can now be completed by a valid student on the Microsoft store without going through the college.

The 32GB RT is costing €296.
The 64GB Surface Pro is €791.

I believe you can validate you student credentials through you college email this makes sense. So no more forms and rubbish like before.

Can someone test this and report back, this really is how it should have been first day.

Needless to say the Surface RT and Pro are wonderful products and with 8.1 on the way this should give them a lift.

I purchased this last weeks and received it a few days ago. Am actually typing from it now. I got the 32GB with touch keyboard for €386.10 and just had to verify my student status by having a link sent to my student email and clicking through on that.

EDIT: For the record I purchased this directly through the Microsoft store website and didn't use the campus.ie link mentioned above at all. On the store page there is a link for students on the bottom of the menu list on the left.
