Less than a week ago, horrifying stuff

What shook me was:

The crash killed four woman and 14 men on the truck, he said. Four others were injured, one of them critically.

Just thought it was strange to happen in the same week as the Santiago de Compostela train crash. Thoughts & prayers with the families.

The point is that Western lives 'appear' more important than Oriental lives.
This did not make the news here at all, yet a fatal bus crash in Italy is the main news story which prompts someone to start a sympathetic thread on boards about it.

In that area the buses drive like crazy. It is not at all surprising that this happened. Accidents are so common they dont make the local news there.

Amazing the amount of people who feel they have to state they don't care about people dying.. would you not just not post about it. I wonder would anybody say the same about the Italy bus crash? Should we only talk about things that directly effect people on AHs?

To be fair I would imagine super rush's response was more about the thread in general as it is an obvious "nobody cares about the brown people" parody thread. Yes we care more about the 38 people who died in Italy, more chance of family and friends there and culturally they are closer, also a million people die in rta's every year in india si it is far more common there.

You do realize there's strict guidelines for bullying. If your hubby believed there was bullying going on, then they should have contacted the site's team and they would have done something about it.

This kind of thread annoys me.. "Oh, you care so much about someone being killed in X than you do in Y". Or whatever. The sad fact of the matter is that people die every day. It's near impossible to keep track of it. And stories in the Western world get more publicity or attention because the chances are that there's a higher chance of people knowing someone involved here than over there. Or whatever. The OP said it happened a week ago. If they actually cared about it, they would have created a thread when it happened, instead of waiting until now just to prove a point.

Certainly a harsh comment to read but I guess it's indicative as to how the location of various accidents/deaths/tragedies happens to affect people's reactions to it.

I guess it stands to reason that people are more likely to care about an individual accident/death/tragedy in the order of:
In home county -> in Ireland -> abroad with Irish people involved -> in the UK -> in Europe -> in North America -> in Oceania -> in the Middle East -> in Russia -> in South America -> in Asia -> in Africa.

The closer to home something happens the more empathy tends to be shown.

No, if I heard of someone starving to death in dublin it would cause me more upset than a person starving to death in Africa, it would also get far more media attention which would suggest most people would agree with me. Its human nature and although you can pretend it does not happen it does.

Note how vicarious, internet disaster hounds are never included in these moralistic roll-calls.

Unfounded accusations of bullying will result in mod action. It's something that is taken extremely seriously by the mods and admins so if it was happening, it should have been reported.
