Football Championship Thread 2013

There's nowhere to discuss the Championship in general and maybe the games without the interest to have a thread of their own.

Cavan playing very well to start the year off. Lovely foot passing, nice scores and tough tight defence.

Really enjoying the game I have to say.

Armagh need to sort themselves out. Some seriously aimless play.Bringing on a clearly unfit Brendan Donaghy proves how desperate they are.

I'd say tv3 will take all of Sunday now.

As far as I know TV3 have first and fourth pick on the quarter finals, RTE have second and third. Mayo v Donegal is the tie of the round so obviously TV3 will plump for that. I reckon RTE will pick Dublin v Cork & Tyrone v Monaghan.

No rte have first and it was announced they're showing Cork Dublin. Read above. They did the same last year when they could have shown Kerry and Donegal but really just chose Dublin Laois to piss of 3.

I dunno I just think its crazy that there is one standout obvious game to choose and RTE give it up like that.

Mayo and Donegal will definitely be on TV3 now. Wonder would they prefer to show the Tyrone Monaghan Game on Saturday? But it is on at 5 so it might mean they'd have to drop Americas Got Pop Factor Idol or what ever sh1t they're showing. If they do show it they arguably get the two best games leaving RTE with what could be the least engrossing double of the lot.

Maybe. But I think the Sunday game is the standout one and would be a hard physical game. I can see Dublin just running through Cork. But that's just the way I see it. Monaghan and Tyrone would be close I think so that's why that would be what TV3 would go for as their second pick leaving RTE with Cavan Kerry which on paper seems obvious.
But rte will probably get it at least as its at 5pm

Of course who knows what will happen on the day but based on recent results and the teams involved it doesn't sit right with me.

The commentary is fine, at least when it's the lad from the Mayo News and Earley. Even O'Se and Hayes are enjoyable enough listens in what is a pretty low bar to begin with, obviously.

The problem is the breaks and what they cut out. Cutting out the celebrations and the speech after the final whistle of the Ulster final was utterly unforgivable.

TV3 will almost certainly pick the two Sunday games.
It wouldn't make financial sense to use up studios, outside broadcast units, travelling expenses for the experts and all the other costs on two days when they could cut all those costs by picking a double header.

The last time Kilkenny did not play championship game in Croke Park was 1951. Mayo won the football that year.

They did it with Dublin and Laois last year. Choosing that game took the biscuit for sure as TV3 would definitely have taken it for more viewers what with them and all their adverts. Of course RTE want viewers but not as desperately as TV3 do.

Maybe pissed off is wrong though. I'd imagine they're laughing and Matt Cooper is getting himself creamed now. At least he won't have to choose between Cork and Dublin.

The person pissed off the most is the viewer no doubt.

Dunno that's sort of the point. It is certainly more anticipated but Dublin have the population.

So you think the national broadcaster would show the game which would intrigue neutrals the most - a repeat of the 2012 final.

bbc have the rights to show Ulster teams (according to prevous twitters) in the quarters so with 3 ties having Ulster involvement you might well see those on TV depending on whether they really want to clear the schedules to show both of the ties with no northern teams in it.
So with RTE showing dublin cork you should be able to avoid TV3 for the entire quarter finals.

Only 1 team from Leinster, 1 from Connacht and the usual 2 from Munster.

The other provinces need to get more competitive. It's clear that the Ulster teams are going into the qualifiers match ready after hardy tests in the province.

The commentator tries too hard with all his cliches.

And Hayes came in last weekend when Mayo were ahead by 17 points saying "Well, Mayo are going to win this match."

Not sure if you are on a wind up but I'll bite if you are.

First of all, ulster teams beating other ulster teams tell nothing about the dominance or otherwise of the province. Lets look at their performances against other teams in qualifiers this year

Armagh beat Wicklow and Leitrim, lost to Galway
Antrim lost to Louth
Derry beat Sligo
Donegal beat Laois
Cavan beat London
Fermanagh beat Westmeath
Tyrone beat Offaly, Kildare, Roscommon, Meath

Tyrone had a very good result against Kildare, Fermanagh had a good result v Westmeath. Donegal and Tyrone both beat decent teams you would expect them to beat. Antrim lost a game you would expect them to, Armagh beat 2 Div 4 teams then lost a Galway team they probably should beat.

I don't see the huge signs of ulster dominance from these results, and ulster teams had some poor results outside the province last year along with Donegal handing out some mailings within ulster.They are the strongest province imo, but Leinster is pretty competitive too . Take the top 2 out of both provinces and not much between next 4-5 teams from either province . Maybe Monaghan and Cavan will kick on and prove your point, they are having great seasons, but both have a bit to do imo to be considered significantly ahead of Meath, Kildare, Laois etc
