seems to be suggesting cyberbullying is worse then old fashioned bullying, mainly cos it can continue outside school at a distance, but is really worse does cyber-bullying actually lead to more evidence other as opposed to most likely one child words against another when its IRL, does a written record embarrass the teacher or parent into having to do something about it more so then IRL bullying, is cyber bullying more likely a crime then bullying.

Bullying is Bullying regardless of where or how it happens. There is a greater chance of exposure to it, due to the availability of being online so easily, such as with smart phones & facebook. But that doesn't make bullying online any different from bullying in the school yard or work place. The action and intent is the same, the only variant is where it occurs. Why should the location become questionable or a factor?

I absolutely despise bullying [though honestly I've never been at the receiving end of it from any form personally], but I just don't understand why cyber-bullying is 'worse' ?

What's stopping you from putting the person on block / ignore ?

Example: Playing League of Legends, the community there is nothing short of disgusting, but I can just put the person on ignore and that's the end of that. No more seeing the tripe that player would be spewing.

You can only put an account on ignore usually. It costs nothing to do up another one and another and another...

FFS - bullying is serious, as a victim of bullying in school I think the most important thing to do is to educate about acceptance, help stamp out bullying in schools, encourage people to interact with others so they can get to know and realise what things they may have in common....and if they have nothing in common ... they accept that they are different to the other person in the same way that the other person is different to them.... so why pick on them ? why make fun of them ? if they are just as different.

Teenagers can be victims to the bullies at anytime now. Piped right into what was once seen as a sanctuary, ie the home or bedroom.

In my day, a victim got respite at home or on holidays as the bully wasn't seen or heard.

AS someone who grew up being bullied i shudder at the thoughts of what victims of bullying go through now. Where I could go home and be safe and sound for a few hours until the next day. Social media and mobile phones now make it possible for bullying to continue 24 7. It's horrible the thing that are said on sites like Askfm.

in reality teenagers/children could have been bullied by others in the home or by others while they are on their holiday ..... so cyber bullying simply allows the bully to constantly attack (but then again - if the victim is not available on social media they cannot receive the cyber bullying)

why not ban social media for U16's

Recognize this for what it is. The government doesn't give a flying f*ck about cyberbullying, they just see it as the easiest way to begin the slippery slope to a regulated internet, after their attempts to cover their intentions with the piracy excuse were torn to shreds by the public.

Don't be fooled by emotionally manipulative arguments or stories, this isn't about bullying but about giving the government its first foothold in being able to decide what is and is not acceptable in terms of free speech online. Don't let it happen.

This. In my day*croaky voice* the bullied kids got some respite, plus they could reinvent themselves over time. Now it's all pickled, forever searchable by google. I can't imagine what it would be like for some of my dopey teenage crap to be still around years later.

Free speech must be protected. I fear soon enough the PC brigade will start handing out fines or worse for people who dare to speak their mind on social issues e.g multiculturalism or other topics online or offline because they may "offend" others.

I'm not a Reddit user, but have you ever heard of a Reddit page called "Sh!t Reddit Says"? This is precisely what you describe: They go around looking for anything even remotely un-PC to get offended about and then complain to site admins trying to get people censored or shut down. They attempted to do this on 4chan of all places... Results were predictable hilarious

Oh god yes

I spend a lot of time on /pol/ so i know all about them. They got the admins to ban one of my favorite subs on reddit (you might know which one it is, caused a lot of controversy recently)

So people should not join social media sites cause bullying will occur and that will stop the bullying? ffs.... cop on. Everyone has a choice. I used to choose to play sports and I got attacked many times on my way home from the guy that bullied me. Did i stop? No! Why should the victim have to change. Ask.fm is an unmoderated website, if you choose to use that specific website you do so with the understanding that what's posted on it may offend you and that no comments are censored except by yourself.
Now personally I'm not someone who takes the internet even remotely seriously, but if I did I would either remove the comments from my page which upset me or simply not use websites which champion freedom of speech over protecting people from being offended. Why should the internet have to change because a small minority can't hack it?

Seriously, your really drawing at straws here. Being offended and being bullied are two completely different things. Also, when you talk about how level headed you are don't forget that we are talking about children and teens here and not adults who can be as emotionally stable and pro-active as yourself.

Our government has been. They asked ask.fm to change their policies and there was even talk of blocking it here from one or two quarters:

However, Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald is now in contact with the EU and Latvian Government over growing concerns about Ask.fm and its links to cyber-bullying.

The Latvian site allows for anonymous user and has no reporting procedures for people concerned about online abuse or bullying.

This incenses me. They want to ban a site which a lot of us use for fun and have a great time with instead of telling parents to do their job? F*ck that.
