Definitely - I remember the 1992 model of the Camry - the first with the 2.2 petrol engines - you couldn't get a diesel in Ireland (new) but Japanese imports came in with diesel engines - could have been a 2.2 as well but I can't remember.

Irish versions of the generation Camry we are looking at here - were 2.4s.

Which is certainly one reason why they aren't very common - a bit of a shame for the Camry - as back in the 80s and 90s - they didn't do too badly here - especially the Mk 2 (87 to 91 model). Having a turbodiesel option at a time when turbodiesels were rare helped their cause - imo.

I'm just pulling strings here, not a bad car for the money, wonder what the 2.0 is like compared to the 2.4 pace wise...Those wheels are awful small as well.

Those were a brilliant car. Used to have a green light on the rev counter that would light up when the turbo kicked in. A lot nippier than the carina e d~turbo.
Would buy one if could find one.

Not only small but really sh!tty looking too! Small wheels=high profile tyres=comfort though

V6, LPG, NCT. And some tax. Very nice looking car IMO

VR4 bumper does wonders to that car.
Love the headlights as well, long and narrow give it an aggressive look. Mind you the headlights are absolutely useless unless you get a really good set of bulbs.

Don't know what bhp the Camry had - but for a 2.0 turbodiesel - the Carina E D turbo was actually not highly tuned at all - with only 81 bhp if I remember rightly.

Given that the Carina E wasn't exactly small - I wouldn't expect it to be overly lively at all (never actually drove either of them). Bear in mind that the 1.6 leanburn had 106 bhp and only had a claimed 0 to 60 time of around 11.4 secs - with 25 bhp to play with.

Yep, although the tax on a 2.3 is a bit harsh. My only fear with this car is that it might need a little recommissioning after the very occasional usage.. Will check it out!

Its like trying to cajole a three legged donkey on tranquilizers into the back of a small trailer on an icy day.

Fantastic straight line performance and mind blowing real world overtaking ability but useless down a bad road. Dreadful traction, hopless communication and one of the most ignorant forms of traction control ever ........great car B-)

You are correct about the GM900 , but in next generation well they are rare & will sadly never appear here on bangernomics thread but in the 1st model 9-3 there was the 2.3T Viggen model;)

I was tempted by a Saab 9-5 that popped up on DD a few weeks back. It was the 3.0Tid Vector Sport model. Seriously looking machine, sadly no NCT or Tax but the price was quite good, something like 1500e I think

EDIT: think it was a 9-3 actually..... not too sure. Im more of an Alfa nut

Id take that 156 over that 9-5 all day long once there are reciepts for all that recent work being done.
