I think it's better that it happened this way as it increased awareness of bad DRM policies and it mightn't have caused such ripples if they just sneaked it in gradually. Plus I feel Microsoft need a wakeup call once in a while. I have no interest in buying the consoles, but the associated industries are interesting and I prefer to see DRM like that get shot down; I'm not even that fond of steam as it is.

I think that it would have really hurt Microsoft short and long term, handing over a lot of power to Sony. Their country restrictions were preposterous, even from a view where you want to protect the digital value of games. I hope their 'loan friends a game' sees some success as I thought it was a pretty good idea. Very interesting if it comes to steam as Serephucus linked earlier. I can't really see it working for many single player games (from a publisher's point of view). Sure you'd get most games finished in a week unless it's a long RPG. It could work with multiplayer - say if a friend played a few games of left 4 dead on your account and then they got into it, they might end up buying it as it's the kind of game that you're going to play with friends.
