Attach emotions to lyrics through sounds even if the lyrics mean absolutely nothing at all... which is the formula for most popular music today.

I think you are wrong harking back to music from the 90's saying it was harmless. i was 12 in 1991 and gangsta rap was in its infancy. it may not have been mainstream but it mentioned everything and more from what i read a few posts back. Look up some of ice t's lyrics. a few choice lyrics from Metalica also spring to mind. this is the same old they didnt do that in my generation bull. the most worrying thing about today is that i can see some dude jizz on a girls face within two clicks of a mouse. that is far more worrying for me.

There may be more 'headline violence', but I'd argue that violence was as pervasive back then as it is now and probably more acceptable as a societal norm. Many believed they would actually go to hell too. There isn't much crime in many totalitarian states but they're still not nice places to live.

I would agree though that the sense of community back then made a huge difference, not just because you would have protection from the flock but because the whole community probably knew your mother and would tell on you should you do anything wrong. That works right into adulthood.

100% right .Turning the other cheek was the norm in De Valeras Ireland which was as suppressive as it was violent .
