I think they're reputable and reasonably priced, but you would definitely save money and get a better system if you built it yourself/payed Hardwareverdand 20 quid to build it for you.

I got a laptop built off them, customer support is pretty good and they were pretty quick, but you'd still probably be better off with building yourself (or getting HWVS to do it for you).

note that 20e to hws is literally to just do the jigsaw (easy) part of the build. I dont believe they even power it on, and certainly dont put an OS on it (think thats an additional charge)

had issues with the bro's new build where it had been 'built' by hws, but the gpu was DOA. Had to strip it back down before finding the gpu at fault, and then, as you dont get any of the original boxes due to the 'build' process, had to be just RMA'd in a static bag..

If I was paying them, I'd go the whole hog of getting them to do the OS install too - as I reckon otherwise its more trouble then its worth

Google around for a tutorial and pick one you like. Also have a project in mind cause you will learn far more by doing a project than from couple of hours reading tutorials. I use Linux in work everyday so I learned through trial and error and also having a task to motivate me.

Any reason for your sudden interest?

Doing a bit on CAD, so I had a look at it-I would go with 2 6MM holes at 54MM centre to centre (assuming its a block wall), 2 x red rawl plugs & 1 1/2" 8 screws and you should be good.

This is based on the marked dimensions on the drawing below, found on amazon.fr, on what looks like the same bracket.

So don't blame me if its different .

Now you'd think, being a computer science graduate, and someone about to embark on a 3D modelling / gaming degree, that I'd have thought of doing that... I'm ceaselessly amazed at the levels of dumb-****ery I can achieve when I (don't) put my mind to things. Thanks very much for that. Should be near enough, not an expert at scaling with CAD, I use it for schematics mainly. Anyway, I know a good plasterer if you need one

I'd say the majority of the budget builds figure a FX6300 in all fairness and a few of the lower end of the bigger budget builds might have an FX8320 in there with a mild overclocking recommendation.

One of the problems with the 8-cores is that although they are a good bit cheaper for the CPU to get the maximal overclocks (4.7-8+) out of them you need to spend that bit more on a good cooler and motherboard whereas you can get alot more out of a i5-3570K with the cheapest of z77 boards and a 30 euro cooler which claws back most of the price difference. Add to that the fact that, in the best case an FX8350 only does about as well as the i5-3500K or maybe a tiny bit better, but lags a fair bit behind in the worst case, and its hard to go against Intel for the 800+ builds.

There's definitely more AMD builds going around now that say, 6 months ago. The FX6300 is really good value in comparison to the i3s. I feel Intel is getting lazy now though - there's actually little gain from 2500K->3570K->4670K. Relative stock performance has increased each time but overclockability is down. Net gain for the overclocker is essentially 0. Aside from goodies like PCI-E 3, better graphics, SATA 6Gbps.

What's the VPS for? Some of those prices are pretty good!

Oh yeah, I was reading yesterday that AMD will be changing FM2 again with the next line up to FM2+. :mad:
Gah! Can't they plan a bit further ahead? The Richland APUs are looking good enough for a small ~9-month increase, but FM1/FM2 have had short lives. That's only a year if Kaveri is released, as expected, before the year's end. Looks like they'll support older APUs, so I suppose that's something.
What's interesting is that it apparently supports GDDR5 - it's assumed that the whole APU and GDDR5 will be soldered to the motherboard (unless you go for the regular motherboard and DDR3 route). So no good for upgrades. My guess is, possibly something similar to the Playstation 4.
