Hey guys, quick question here. I have an MSI motherboard for a few months now, and never tried to the core unlocker tool that comes with the driver CD, so I (possibly foolishly) tried it to see if I would get a better performance, and it needed to restart to work it said. It restarted, and now its on a permanent black screen, with no bios/splash screen. It starts up like normal, fans going, but no beep off the speaker on the mobo! I can't get into safe mode to reset it or anything

My CPU is an AMD 6 core. Any ideas what to do to get it back to normal?

I think removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes resets the BIOS, but maybe the more experienced guys know a better way.

It sounds like it changed some bios setting and it's too unstable to boot. Look ok the motherboard manual to find out how to reset the bios on your board. If you cant figure it out just take the round battery out of the motherboard for a few mins then put it back in and start up the system.

Don't be afraid to try overclocking again, it's actually normal for it to take a few goes to get it right. You can get reset the bios until you get it right

phew thats good to hear thats it not a major problem. I thought I may have fecked up something badly. I'll reply back if I cant get it back to normal. Looks like ill have to take out the battery, as the only thing in the manual for resetting the bios, tells you to do it in the bios menu, which isnt coming up for me.

There's normally a jumper with 3 pins, standard setting is for it to be on pins 1 and 2, if you move it to pins 2 and 3 and leave it for a minute the bios will reset. The you move it back to pins 1 and 2 .
On more expensive motherboard there's just a button to press to reset the bios.

If you've got six cores, then there's there's probably nothing unlockable. The Phenoms only have six cores in them and as far as I am aware, the FX hexacores don't unlock.

Should be fine after CMOS reset, and you can still overclock to push it further.

Yep removing the battery worked fine, so I have been looking to overclock it using the AMD Engine CC. It got it up to 4.70 ghz max, but odd thing is, when I overclock the CPU, the windows aero and peek effects get disabled, and ive troubleshooted it down to being when I overclock, as when I disabled the overclocking, the aero and peek comes back fine.

Any ideas whats the problem? I have tried troubleshooting using windows tool, and it says to enable desktop window manager is disabled, but when I try to enable it, the aero effect comes back for a second, then goes again. Its all very odd tbh, didnt think they both could be related.

Er... maybe you need to re-run the windows experience index.

Make sure that your RAM isn't overclocked too far when overclocking AMD CPUs.

Re running windows experience doesnt seem to do anything.

I didnt think I was even overclocking ram, thought it was just the CPU?

If you're increasing the HTT or whatever it's called on your system, your RAM will get overclocked too, unless you set it to a lower frequency (or change divider/multiplier, depending on the layout of the BIOS menu).
Well, that is unless you have your RAM speed set to auto, in which case it probably sets at a lower speed to compensate.

Not really sure that it explains aero not showing up, but your system could be unstable. Make sure that you run a stability test like prime95 to check that it's stable.

I was looking at upgrading my x4 955 to the FX 8320, but it seems to be a risky move.

GIGABYTE locks you out of 125W TDP 8-core processors on this board as their validation process did not pass these 8-core processors for safe use on unheatsinked 4+1 phase VRMs across their lineup (including this board). A new board is needed for an 8320 because the VRM setup may not be able to handle one reliably and safely.

Yeah, a lot of boards manufacturers were promising upgrades to AM3+ at the time, but in the end, only a few followed through. I found it pretty annoying as boards above and below one that I had were granted BIOS updates but they left out my particular model.
Some of the boards are cheap though, for decent features - relative to Intel.

Its not an absolutely massive upgrade anyway TBH, and if you need to upgrade both board and CPU you might be as well off waiting for steamroller as AMD will almost certainly release new chipsets, and I would expect CPU performance to improve substantially as they continue to identify and fix the performance bottleneck in the architecture.

If you need to upgrade now and are getting a new board, it now might be worth looking at Intel, although a 8320 of course remains a good budget friendly alternative as well.

Not sure if yours is a black edition or not which makes it easier, but if you could overclock the 955 to even the level of the 980BE (3.7 GHz), it offers very similar single threaded performance to the FX8320 (a little bit better even), and it is only in the most demanding of multithreaded benchmarks does it fall well behind.

It should be achievable as my 965BE can get to 3.7 no problem on there on it stock voltages, and most other 955/965 can as well.

No your wright, there is nothing out there at the moment that offers a useful upgrade. Have an itch so I got a Corsair H110, a corsair obsidian 800d and a Asus ROG Rampage Formula 2011 motherboard. Should make of a neater build and allow me more overclocking headroom. Going for a red and black theme, so trying to figure out how to get the green Nvidia "GEFORCE GTX" logos on the side of the cards to go red.

Thanks for the reply. I have my X4 955 at 3.8 already using a Scythe Mugen. I know that the single-threaded performance of the FX CPUs isn't the greatest, but I do quite a lot of streaming which I think would benefit from additional cores.

That's is Damn cool indeed! Great spec and silent. I usually upgrade only when I need, but if the price is right, I might take this. 680 is still stupidly expensive for what it is now, so I doubt I will ever need 750w corsair that I have at the moment. 650w should be a golden spot for single GPU setup.
