UPC Horizon Set Top Box trial

Folk's.

I was onto UPC today to get a better deal on my package,
the bloke I was speaking to mentioned a new UPC Horizon set top box due out later this year . anybody know anything about it ?

I done a google search, couldnt really find much,,
but what I did find,,,

You can sync your ipad/phone etc to it, and play music from your phone/ipad on your tv. and photos etc
Its going to hold thousands of hours of recording's.
there seems to be some app store on it, so you can go and buy apps to play etc.

if anybody has more info, would be very grateful, as this new box seems to be taking on SKY ...maybe a UPC V SKY price war on the way

HELP!!
My friend had the Horizon box installed on Wednesday and has had no broadband since and no has no tv.
UPC just keep saying they will call back and nothing.

Does anyonwe have a number to speak to someone to get her horizon service sorted??

Getting 20MB download on wifi and 46MB when connected through cable with the new box, I was getting 20MB on my old router with the 25MB package. Does anyone else think that this is a bit off the mark?

Tell your friend to send them a DM on twitter they are usually quick enough in getting someone to call back

I was talking to UPC about this trial and what my bill would actually be after the addons and other bits were applied,
during this I mentioned I would keep the old modem which is upstairs where it suits me cablewise.
I was informed that this would cost a €45 "non-consolidation fee", has any one else been told this?

Tell them then that you're going to charge them a 'free time testing your new service fee'.

Just got off the phone with a nice lady confirming my appointment for tomorrow.

My box will be delivered tomorrow by the courier. No mention of collecting old equipment, I guess I'll keep the old box unless UPC says they want it back.

I see my subscription no longer includes Sky Sports, but I don't think I'll complain since it's the end of the football season anyway.

I was the same, and I rang last night but their systems were down and was promised a call back. Never got it.

Yes, that's what i was told - but the confirmed subscription no longer lists Sky Sports and the price reflects that. Let's see what happens, I don't really mind either way. I can always resubscribe in August.

Just got call a call back from a UPC Horizon team member confirming the overall price to me if I changed. I’m currently on 50mb with multiroom, HD channels and home phone anytime world. I currently pay €91 euro before usage charges ( calls to mobiles/ on demand films)
The Horizon person confirmed my new price at €93.5 which is fine for 100mb broadband.

Reading this thread and also the Horizon instruction booklet I asked her if I could retain my router and just connect the Horizon box in client mode ( by wifi to my router) . She said no and that both the old HD box and my router had to be returned for anyone taking part in the Trial.
I suggested to her that this was going to annoy a lot of people who have varying complexities of set up and that I was going to have to think about whether I would bother changing at all. My PC and TV are 40 feet from each other with a cable wired form the UPC wall socket around the room to the router .

If I get an all in one Horizon box I’ll need a cat 5 cable wired from the UPC wall socket to connect both the PC and the phone. ( Will a UPC Engineer provide CAT 5 cabling ) . Much easier to leave the router as is and just connect the Horizon box as a client.

I just got offered the Horizon bundles today but I dont really want to downgrade from 120Mb to 100Mb for my broadband service. Has anyone managed to stay on 120Mb and move to Horizon?

When the technician installed horizon for me yesterday I wasn't bothered about keeping the old box and router but he insisted I keep them in case I need to use my old router for anything,there was never any questions regarding returning equipment from anyone at any stage

Would you notice the difference from 120Mb to 100Mb? I'd have thought you'd need a pretty special PC and a lot of e.g. HD content to notice much difference.

If you d/l a file and it takes 10 secs instead of 7, would it matter? Just asking....

Having followed this thread and read the feedback (which is fairly comprehensive, fair play) I’ve decided to decline the offer of the Horizon trial. I’m just not sure it will be worth the hassle for me.

I’ve already got:
Digital + HD box with 21 HD channels and Sky Sports HD package
50MB Broadband
Home phone (never used it)
Apple TV
USB connection via Surround Sound system if I want to play downloaded movies etc

Apart from being able to record 4 things at once and an increase in BB speed, I don’t really see any major benefits of Horizon above and beyond what I have. The thoughts of encountering the numerous problems listed on this thread far outweigh any benefits of the €100 credit on offer in my mind. Am I missing something?
