Im going to upgrade it soon enough I know the case I want and will have but for now the merc alpha was the nicest case that had decent cooling and didnt look like some terminators aborted child

Processor in motherboard, cooler on processor, RAM in motherboard, PSU connected to motherboard, test boot, (assuming successful) all that in case, then add GPU and hard drives, etc.

its more so earthing my self and stuff like that and how do i set a test boot ?

A normal boot up, to test things.

You just hit the power button on your motherboard (I assume something that high-end will have an onboard power button) and assuming you have a monitor plugged in, if you get to your BIOS then everything you have plugged in is working.

It's just much easier to check this way, otherwise if something wasn't working when you put it all together, the first thing we'd tell you to do is take everything out, put your motherboard on top of the box it came in, and with only the bare essentials connected try and boot up.

Not sure I agree with the touching an earth to remove the static charge.

Yes it will remove all charge from you, but what if the case has a charge.
then the electricity could jump from the case to you, possibly through a sensitive part.

I always find a bare metal part on my case to equal our charge rather than remove it.

Has anyone actually ever damaged a part because of static charge?

one problem im having is the motherboard doesn't fit with the risers on :S

when i tuck them of it fits okish that plate at the back cause some issues ...

I've never really paid much attention to static to be honest. If you want you can just touch your case first, then other earthed things afterwards. I haven't lost anything yet. There was that one graphics card, but I think that was more that I dropped it down the stairs...

To avoid static build the computer totally naked, watch out for sharp edges on the case however.

Putting together a computer...one of life great pleasures. Never being happy with cable management...life greatest annoyance.

You want to be careful with the motherboard and installing it into the case as if the back of the motherboard is touching any metal it will short-circuit and you'll be waiting another 2 weeks before you get a new one

I built a PC in a Merc Beta and it had two gold risers installed in the case, but the case itself had inbuilt risers so I didn't need to two that came pre-installed.

From looking at pics of the Merc Alpha it seems to have the same inbuild risers. Remove any of the gold risers that have already been screwed into the motherboard tray and sit the motherboard down onto the motherboard tray. There is 9 bits of metal bent up with a screw hole in the centre of the risen bit. These are the inbuilt motherboard risers and the holes on your motherboard should line up with these nicely.

Im just making sure i have a kettle lead with euro french/german can i swop thar for an irish one?

my graphics card Sapphire 7950 vapor has 2x8 and my power suply has 8+6 pci cables will i swop them for the adapter cable and then connect them to the molex cables?

I'm just using a screw on adaptor on mine. If you do get a new lead for it, make sure you have the right fuse in the replacement.

So I just powered up my pc for the first time and everything worked its Noisey

but ill sort that in the fan control on the asus motherbord controller. Big thank you to every one who gave me advice answered any of my worries and to blood bath for giving me the idea to build my own pc...

Now im of to play games and install lots of stuff
