is it just me, or is most modern music crap?

Today's music for the most part seems to be full of manufactured pop groups, all pumping out the same cheesy trash.

We need a new guitar based rock band revolution.

Can anyone recommend me a band that have emerged in the last few years to listen to?

I'm convinced talent has dried up :mad:

I was a 90's teen and i think the 80's and 90's were. 70's were good, but then there was disco. 90's was great. Loads of indi bands, grunge and a developing electronic scene. But there was plenty of crap too.

What age are you? I'm 33 and am still finding new stuff. Currently on dupstep, strangely good music. Saying that 'there's no good music any more' is a such a stereotypical cliche. You do realise that people have been saying that since 1300?

I'm in my 20s and think modern music is crap. My parents had it a lot better. Its annoying how I'm expected to like all the modern crap just because of my age.

When I was young, decent bands making it into the mainstream meant a lot more because it was so much harder to find alternative music back then.

Now, you can near-instantly find more new music than you could ever hope to listen to, so why bother if they get featured in the media or not?

That said, maybe I'm biased but the quality of mainstream pop music is definitely objectively worse than 20 years ago but overall, good music is made in any era.

i'd say you've got a bit older ? maybe late 30s ? if so then you are probably listening to too much daytime radio (which is utterly ****e).
The last 30 or 40 years has been full of manufactured pop groups, all pumping out the same cheesy trash from the eagles right up to calvin harris. The only thing thats changed is where you hear of new music. The brilliant music you listened to 20 years ago wasn't played on the radio either.

Generally not into guitar based rock bands myself but I'm sure there's plenty out there. It just involves a bit of effort on your part to read up on them on music sites and blogs or have a root on the likes of Youtube or Spotify. The talent has definitely not dried up!!!

God I hate people who do the whole "music is crap these days" hipster thing.

And this is coming from someone who's favourite bands are the oldies.

But there is plenty of good music out there but people will just go on about the One Direction types. Give me any decade and I'll find you crap cheesy chart music like that.

You need to get yourself into the music world OP, there's tonnes of incredible bands and DJs out there today, find a decent music blog and ignore the radio!

You're just getting old.

To a certain extent it can appear on the surface that the proliferation of pop is getting worse, but it's not actually the case. The issue is that mainstream radio stations are "encouraged" by the major labels to include their pop acts in playlists.

Independent labels and smaller groups don't have the influence to do this, so they're dependent on the musically-minded DJs who build their own playlists rather than the usual DJs who just press play on the pre-arranged playlist given to them. If it's a show that's more about entertainment than music (like a breakfast show) then you're only going to hear crap. If it's a show about music, you'll hear music.

This doesn't mean though that there's less good music out there, you just have to work a little harder to hear it.

Worth noting that the big companies' profits have been consistently dropping year on year - singles sales are high, but album sales are dropping.

This is nothing to do with downloading, it's down to the simple fact that the people/children who buy pop music tend to buy singles, not albums. And singles aren't very profitable.

I think most music has been crap for quite a long time, it's just that we had more good music in the "past" because the "past" usually refers to a few decades, whereas "now" refers just to the last year or so.

So obviously we assume that there was more good music in the past, we simply don't realise that is was just as thin on the ground back then, it just becomes more when looked at as a "best of" of the last few decades.

That said, I find myself listening mostly to classical these days. I seem to have somewhat lost my taste for contemporary music
