Cyclists on a Backroad

I can't be the only person whose head is absolutely melted by the sheer quantity of people in clothes which are far too tight, with tortoises on their head taking up the roads of Ireland on their bikes...

I have nothing against cycling. Its a fantastic form of transport, but these people are taking up room, and are an accident waiting to happen. When cycling for fitness instead of practicality can you not please bring your bikes to a main road where there is space?

I would have thought it was common politeness to pull in and let people overtake in that scenario. Same as if you're walking slowly and someone behind you is pushing a trolly, pram or suitcase a lot faster than you. You let them pass you by out of decency instead of holding up their journey.

To be honest, as someone who walks all the time what the OP encountered in this case with the group of cyclists sounds like the kind of thing you get when a group of people walks slowly and in such a wide formation that you can't get past without stepping onto the road. I'd have the same amount of ire for those people. It's not about legal rights it's about etiquette and simple politeness.

Not even going to bother replying to you, you clearly have some sort of agenda.

You also seem to lack the ability to read, cyclist, pedestrian, motorist, no one likes to be held up because of someone else's actions, and shouldn't have to change their behavior because someone else is hindering them.

Absolutely. But I think it should be a general rule, not just in terms of the road, that if you're moving slowly for whatever reason and someone / something behind you is moving faster, you should let them pass - and in particular, if you're in a slow moving GROUP, leave room of the pavement / road for others to get past.

It actually pisses me off far more on the pavement than on the road. The number of times you either get a whole bunch of people walking side by side at a snail's pace and forcing other pedestrians into traffic to overtake, or even worse, hanging around in a group on a corner or outside a shop with absolutely no room for anyone to get past without stepping onto the road. It's fairly bent. Nothing wrong with travelling or hanging around in a group obviously, but to take up the entire pavement or road and knowingly inconvenience tons of other people, when you could go single file instead even for just a minute to let people walk / drive past is just ridiculous.

Worst thing ever is seeing two people coming towards you with buggies walking side by side along a footpath where they barely fit. Or when you're on a really narrow path and there's a poor old person walking ahead of you and the traffic's too busy to get ahead of them. :P

You could use the same argument about car traffic. People get help up in traffic every day because of other people's actions (i.e their driving of cars). A lot of the time it's just unavoidable. Cyclists need/want to cycle, you shouldn't expect them not to do so because it makes your trip a bit shorter.

Yeah that's what I mean! The first poster said get the bus if slow cyclists were annoying, but it's all the same. Sometimes you just have to be behind cyclists making your journey longer, just like when you're walking you might happen to be behind a slow old person on a very narrow lane. But that doesn't mean you should've left your house 10 mins earlier in case you ended up walking being the old man like another poster suggested, that's just ridiculous :rolleyes: Sh!t happens. Sometimes you can overtake slow people, bikes, vehicles, sometimes you can't!

I have never been in a group of cyclists that didn't pull into single file to allow traffic to pass on a narrow road.

I do dismount when neccessary.
It's not irrelevant, cyclists take up just as much room on the road as a horse, both move slowly so it's a fair comparrison.

Its more "hassle" for a moterist to be stuck behind someone slow for 20 mins than it is for you to unclip your pedals.
