A terrible story, but in fairness, I doubt many Irish crimes get reported in Brazil.

If it had happened in the UK, America, anywhere else in the world, I wouldn't necessarily expect to see it reported here, either. Sadly, things like this happen every day all over the world.

A lot of crazy shít happens in Brazil. But to be honest, in general day to day, we are so far removed from there, that it's of little value to us to hear of each instance of abuse/assault.

You can be certain that there will be a massive amount of travel advisorys available to the Public before they head to these events and beefed up security. Stay tight on the beaten track in groups and there will be nothing to worry about. Venture elsewhere? Well, you'll be in some pretty dangerous parts of the world and running the risk of bad things happening. I don't think that would be news to anyone (shouldn't be anyway).

I also see nothing amiss in Irish news outlets failing to run this story. I would be surprised if a Brazilian news outlet ran daily updates on the Nicola Furlong case for example. You'll likely see selection contrary to your theory as the World Cup nears, where we get coverage of Brazilian crime and economic news way in excess of the general average.

There is a major difference between how both cases occurred in Brazil and India. Brazilian authorities appear to be handling the case, where as the Indians didn't seem at all concerned until international pressure.

A friend of mine just got back from her second visit to India. She is naturally blonde and the first time she was there, men would constantly stare at her, follow her around and even touch her. Still at a loss as to how Rio got the Olympics, its reputation was hardly stellar before this story and the stories coming out where people are being forcibly evicted to create a motorway to service the olympic stadiums is pretty disgraceful

If it happened anywhere other than on a bus, it probably wouldn't be reported. Rapes on a bus are topical following the horrific reports from India, and the whole theme of women tourists being unsafe is in the news following the subsequent rape of the poor Swiss woman.

It was also probably a slow news day.

To be honest the difference between a story being reported or not can be as simple as it being a 'slow news day'.

If not much happens here then they start searching for international stories like this to cover on news and radio.
