When kenny came down thursday was an ideal time to protest, unfortunately only a handful of people bothered their ass to turn up, by all means don,t protest and sit at home if that is what you wish to do but don,t bother giving out when important decisions are made that effect you and that includes all the naysayers who slagged off people for protesting on the other thread, the chickens are coming out to roose now.

Just spotted this on twitter. Relates to the proposed breakup of the SE Network.
In my own opinion, this will result in the chipping away over time of WRH's facilities and allocations given that Cork's priority will be Cork.

Whether its confirmed by the minister or not, I have that uncomfortable feeling that we're onto the next phase of this where many who said this wouldn't happen and that it was scaremongering may well move onto explaining how its a good thing.

While I'm open to being convinced that this is a good thing, my disgust at this government just went up a notch today for which I'll no doubt be lambasted.

The handful that came out to protest did so about the property tax and water rates. Nothing about the hospital so I really don't see your point.

Unfortunately a handful of protesters shouted "shame, shame"to local business people, one businessman said - what r u on about - im here trying to make a living, employing local people". The protesters fell quiet for a few minutes.
it dosent show our city in a good light - when the media are all around covering a good news story, and handful of ppl are upsetting the apple cart. SHAME ON THEM! International business ppl are told Waterford is milititant, and i think it is!

I pretty sure he meant roost. I'm pretty sure you knew that also.

Can we all bit just discuss the realities of this without resorting to the too familiar 'oh the "scaremongerers have a point.. Time to distract by criticising grammar and playing the I don't see your point" card, and equally on the other hand going off on one without us knowing the extent of this.

What I'd love not to see here is a load of party coordinated responses veiled in sneering comments and a load of that's it we're doomed on the other hand.

If this is bad for Waterford, lets work that out first. I suspect it is, but I'm holding my horses. If it is, lets do something constructive about it without basing that on a love or hatred of any one group of politicians. If its wrong for us, lets oppose it properly without any loyalty for anything other than the good of the place we call home!

People willbe militant of they continue to be mstreated. Thousands have marched in relation to the proposed cuts to WRH, those same thousands walked along with the left wing element, who tend to hijack these events. We were told weeks ago that WRH was safe now we have this stealth move from the government, which is in my eyes disgusting, but then again this governments dealings have been based on lies since before they were elected.
I could not care less that some businessman was embarrassed by some left wing ranting, you can continue to paint the city in a bad light, militant, embarassing, business wont set up here and all the rest, while this government continues to ignore and downgrade us. Well done, good to see you have your priorities straight.

The save our hospital group and others could have came out to protest thursday to keep the pressure on but instead choose to sit at home, they did the same when o reilly came, the head of steam built up after sw march people didn,t keep up the pressure on the government anytime a government minister came only a handful of people bothered protesting, the timing was well thought out bring news about jobs first to soften the coming blow, then annouce the bad news after kenny has left and gone from waterford to avoid a real protest, when people refuse to protest about issues they are feel are important to them don,t complain you lose the right to an opinion when you don,t try to make a difference.

The hospital decision makers were not there on Thursday so the protests would have fallen on deaf ears. There is a mentality in Waterford right now of bitching/moaning and half arsed protesting. People who are alert to this kind of nonsense, and who speak out against it, become known as FG sympathizers.

First off, there was no bad announcement today, only someone on a local radio station reading the words of a journalist.

Secondly, as part of Enda's speech on Thursday he said the words:

"This is a good day for waterford. In my opinion this is the day that starts Waterford's comeback." He then said that there would be an announcement about the hospital in a few weeks.

Now, he brought up the hospital...nobody asked him about it. Why would he bring it up like that if a bad news announcement was just days away?

But to answer your question, if fifty thousand people lined the streets of waterford I don't think they could prevent certain changes being made. It's what those changes will be that we're all waiting for. And nothing has been learned today.

I was there thursday so was 2 others who posted on the thread about thursdays protest, we didnt shout shame at any business people thats a load of bs, shame was directed at richard bruton when he arrived and enda kenny when he arrived.

Honest question.. purely out of curiosity than anything with divilment in mind..

Are any of the posters here members of or supporters of a political party? It'd just make things so much easier to discuss!

Me.. I'm Fine Féin. I wouldnt fit into any of them, and if I did, I'd go off on one and leave by mutual consent within the week.

The two points of view Ive heard on this in the last hour or so through a number of sources are

A) This is a disaster in that the money, staff allocations, appointments, clinics etc will drip slowly out of Waterford and in the Cork direction. If we don't hold the regional status and the budget, then its a diversion of resources to Cork, which fits the perceived aim of this country's rebuild being based on a 3 gateway city model for 3 distinct regions, with Waterford as population centre 2 in the southern region. It would seem also that our good relationship with RCS in Dublin would be up for dismantling?

This is good. It means we will not be left behind and will have the best of both worlds - access to Cork's expertise and University without losing the services. A happy medium brought about by 15k people reminding the FG politicians that we exist. That or whatever setup allows autonomy and continued success and growth for WRH.

At the moment, I'd love to believe B is true but to be honest, the leakage of the various HQ's, VECs etc and the downgrade of Waterford City (my opinion) in comparison to Galway, Cork and Dublin's status leads me to believe that the hospital services assurances are fluff to appease the masses.

If its A, we need a massive strong united protest that breaks even the most loyal shackles that some people have to FG and makes people realise that they too are being patted on the head by their own party leadership. TDs that made assurances make the stand they committed to making and we battle together with a number of extra independents.

Lets hope that option B is what emerges, and let there be dancing, TK and buns at the cumann meetings and on the streets of Waterford.

Yes, Yes it does.

I am happy to admit I have voted Fianna Fail all my life, I don't know if I would vote for them in any future election. I am not affiliated to FF or anyone else. But I think there are a few on here affiliated either to FG, Labour, SF or the socialists. Those people that are, need to state their alliegience and then leave it at the door.
