Immigrants that come to Ireland then run the country down all the time

Recently I witnessed an immigrant who had come to Ireland running down the country to an Irish man. The Irish man took so much, and held his tongue. But it went on, and on, and then the immigrant started to run down the Irish.
At this point the Irish man snapped, and said; how dare you come to my country and run down my people? Don't you ever dare run down the Irish or Ireland. If you don't like it here, then why did you come? Go home if you don't like us or our country.
This made me think. Would I emigrate to another country and start running down its people or the country? I think not.
As bad as Ireland is, and its people; I don't think immigrants should come here and run it down. The Irish run down their own people, and country enough as it is.
I for one am sick of people doing this. I have pride in my people and my country.
That is why I am not emigrating, I am living through the recession. Its hard enough to do that as it is, without listening to people running the country down.
After much thought, I thought the Irish man that put the immigrant down had a point. He stood up for what he believed in; Ireland and the Irish.
What do you think? Was he right or wrong to do that?

Why not? I don't see any problem with immigrants continuing their customs here, but it's a two-way street - if I were living in a different culture, I'd make an effort to abide by some of the ways of life of my new country. I can't see anything wrong with a bit of balance.

I've lived in Ireland for 13 years now, and it's a great country. I would never think of running it down.

Irish people, on the other hand ..!

I jest, of course, but since I pay taxes here, why would my opinion be worth less? I've already commented, elsewhere, that I think Irish people could use a bit of outside perspective, without which there's a risk of parochialism.

And I'm glad that here and in the UK there is far more flexibility and liberalism towards people who come here from different cultures than for instance in Saudi, but I very much disagree with an "I won't compromise at all" attitude also.

I've lived here for 26 years and I couldn't have managed to do so without some integration.

Of course he was right.

I can understand them moaning about the country: buses running late,crap government or the bloody weather but i've seen some outrageously offensive 'observations' made about Irish people from immigrants.

I get what you mean OP, I used to hang around with a good few Eastern Europeans and sometimes they would put down Ireland and Irish people (though they would do the same to their own country also) and it would irk me.

It's like when you pick on your little brother its ok but when someone else does it you get protective.

Ireland is a good country, we're definittely on the right track but it's not the best country in the world (or even top40) but maybe next generation will get there because we all more or less all have the same aspirations.

Part of the problems this country has is to do with the (completely accidental) PR job the country has done in all the other countries Irish people have gone to, e.g. St. Patricks day parades in all the proper global countries & people of avowed Irish descent in the top tier of society in those countries.

A bit of introspection and self criticism really wouldn't do us any harm at all and I say this as a citizen of blackistan or one of dem other forden cuntries. (hooray for free council houses and dole).

I'm an immigrant myself and so often I heard other immigrants telling me how great their lives were back home. I didn't say anything to them but I thought why didn't they just move back to their great lives? I had been living in different countries which people think are awesome like Australia and Canada and so on but I still think Ireland is the best place to live. I meet nice and kind people everyday and everywhere in Ireland.

I feel that if this thread was about an Irishman living in Australia dressing down the locals, there would be an endless ream of posters calling for the guy to essentially "f*ck off elsewhere".

As far as the topic is concerned, a number of my colleagues happen to be immigrants. From speaking to them, it would seem that the majority are happy and content with their current situation, and are certainly more than willing to speak positively about Ireland and the Irish. Admittedly this is not necessarily the case for everyone, as I have one colleague who continues to impress upon me that a small town that doesn't have a vast number of late night Cafes and Restaurants littering the streets is an abomination.

The people who are upset with their situation tend to be homesick, or simply sentimental about their life back home.

Within reason I'll accept criticism, I know us Irish obviously inflate our global importance and continue with our nagging inferiority complex towards GB. I think it hurts some when they find out what other cultures think of us, the worst I ever heard was the white N word term which was used in the USA in the past, NY/NJ especially.

We obviously have suffered abuse abroad so that's why I always try to understand the immigrants gripes, we know we aren't perfect but maybe together we can improve and push forward, Ireland is capable of much more.

The conversation took place in Dublin, and it was actually a Galway man that put the immigrant down. He took the fair criticism of Ireland, but when it came to criticising the Irish; that was too much for him to take.
I put it to the immigrant myself; I would not emigrate to your country then run it down or its people to you. I have respect. I might have my opinions on your country and your people, but I would keep them to myself.
He took on board what I said, and I never heard him run down Ireland or the Irish again.
