How to get rid of Mice

I know how the mice are getting in. There is a small gap just under the roof where birds during spring pecked out a hole and had nests. I put up with them.

I set traps in the attic but they are not touched. I'm sure the mice are between my bedroom ceiling and the attic. So how do I get rid of them? if I put in poison and seal up the hole then I don't want to be stank out of it for Christmas. I'm not sure anyone could get snap traps in there and I don't know anyone with a ferret. I don't want to get the sonic thing as we also have a hamster.

I'm not worried about them getting into the house as I have terriers.

Ideas?

Use the poison, you won't notice the smell.

Its only a small gap, just big enough for a starling to get in so I would need a ladder and just toss in the poison. I just hope there is no birds in there.

I looked on the net and some people said the dead mouse left an awful smell.

Get a rodent bait box and put it in your attice. Also block up any entry to your attic space from outside to prevent the problem arising again. What bait are you using in the traps btw??

I used peanut butter and cheese in the traps in the attic but there is no sign of mice there or any droppings. They seem to only be in the space between attic and my bedroom ceiling. I used to hear an odd bit of a scuttle, now I'm hearing more so I'm worried they are having mouse orgies up there:o

You could get a few bait boxes, I picked up a rentokil version in woodies recently, think it was about a tenner for two boxes that were prebaited.

The mice must be feeding somewhere so see about leaving them around the attic or maybe out in the garage if you have one.

I picked up a bag of coal in the garage recently to realise the bottom had been chewed out by an inquisitive mouse, on closer inspection of the ground I spotted a few droppings that were blue, the same colour as the poison so I'm guessing that mouse got his just desserts

A good tip aswell if you're filling the hole is to use the expanding foam after stuffing a bit of steel wool in. Mice will sometimes eat through expanding foam but apparantly the steel wool will put them off.

Cheese is a waste of time - I've found Twix bars to be gud as mice are partial to chocolate

Thanks but I have a certain breed of terrier that would make cats look like amateurs.

I would not fit a cat in the gap.

Birdnuts at present I don't think they are coming into the attic at all. I did a though check. Would it be possible they go outside to feed?

Just to repeat what others have said: if you poison, they will die under a floorboard or in a wall cavity and you will have a stink of rotten flesh for 3 months.

From recent past experience, if you go down the trap route; a peanut secured in place with a rubber band (mice will easily steal the bait without setting the trap off) gets them every time.

But eventually we had to get Rentokil in. They sealed up _any_ holes in the exterior at ground level that looked big enough for a mouse and laid traps all over the house and attic. The bait they use comes in a tube and is like a grey toothpaste. It makes the mice dehydrate as well as poisoning them and so they have to leave in search of water before dying. The stuff you buy in the shops is not the same product at all. Their method is keep baiting and watching to see if it's been touched. If any mice died in our attic we never noticed any smell. But hey-presto, no more mice.

Ferret fur is supposed to be a deterrent. If a rat or mouse smell it they won't go anywhere near the place.

Hi we are having a major problem with mice at the moment, have caught 10 mice so far, under our sink, under the fridge, the attic and hot press. We are terrified, have traps set up all over the house now have not caught anything since the weekend, we have laid poison too in attic and shed, under sink and in hot press cos we think they had a nest in hot press, I rang rentokil last week asked for a price cost €250 incl vat which i thought was very expensive i asked them do they seal the holes also for this price they said no they just tell us where problem is, has anyone else thought there prices are very expensive?

Very expensive. But when the 10 mice becomes 20 and then 30, the price seems that bit more bearable.

I would also say that the guy who comes to the door may well be agreeable to either sealing or at least informing you on the best way to DIY seal any gaps. Our guy did it as "a favour".

My problem turned out to be birds. So I just leave them be. Every so often I here them walking around.

If the problem does not go away I think I will call in rentokill, I suppose if they were small gaps they mite feel sorry for me and fill them in. I could not leave them be in attic or anywhere in the house, But 10 mice is a lot,
