THE average price of the humble bag of chips is set to jump to more than €2.50 after a doubling in the cost of potatoes.

Forget about the economy or the rising spate of burglaries, a bag of chips and a fresh cod is now costing over a tenner ffs!

I always order onion rings in my local chipper, they're gorgeous and the lad who works there always throws in a huge scoop of chips.

If they can give away so many for free then the chips must cost them practically nothing

1/ purchase deep fat fryer from aldi/argos/lidl/ wherever the fcuk
2/ Buy small bag of spuds from supermarkert and some cooking oil
3/plug in and turn on deep fat frier and pour in cooking oil
4/ wash spuds and chop them with skin on for lovely tasting homemade chips
5/ *OPTIONAL* order cod from chipper and collect.
6/ cook chips for about 8 mins untill golden brown
7./ apply chips to plate and and optional cod from chippy
8/apply salt and or vinegar
9/ Eat
10/ Save a bundle from making decent homemade chips and use those savings to buy the occasional treat of a bag of chips from the chipper coz its so damn expensive

Yeah, I remeber the late 80's, early 90's, you wouldn't pay more than 40-60p for a bag of chips....if that at all!

Better quailty too, not the muck you see around today.

Handcut, chunky, slight crisp with an airy softness on the inside. Beautiful when you caught a fresh hot batch, some light salt and splash of vinegar. The first few would always dance around your mouth with the heat.

A smattering of ketchup was always a treat.

Does he actually own the chipper as well as work there, or is he just working there?

It's always easier to throw away other people's money, but if it was coming out of his own pocket I guarantee he wouldn't be quite so generous.

Its 2.40 for a large bag of chips in Luigis chipper in Carlow Town and they usually give you enough for 2 people.

God be with the days you used to get the oul Sausage special or burger special which was a sausage or burger in a snack box filled with chips and curry sauce and a bottle of score cola for a pound! Only about 13 years ago.

Thanks to the chippers putting the price up every year, I rarely buy them today. So they've helped with my health and pocket.:D

All chippers used to throw in a fistful of chips if you were just getting a burger. There's still the odd place that does it, and I'd spend my money there rather than one of the places that wouldn't throw in anything.

Hmmm, I guess it depends where your buying. 2.50 in an italian chipper (the chips turn out to be a meal in itself) is pretty good.
And I can't see a problem with people getting less takeaways. It'd be depressing if this started the revolution a few have been saying was coming:S

All those people looking back with fondness to the days of their youth when chips only cost 50p a bag, should remember that you had to work a 14hour shift down the mine for 7p in those days. So that bag of chips actually represented your Dad having to spend 100hours in a dark and dangerous environment with the constant fear of tunnel collapse not to mention respiratory problems in later life.

You gotta love Irish people! What does moaning about the price of something change if you still pay the asking price? Nothing.

The chipper is free to sell at whatever price he likes, and you're free to buy at that price, or not.

Chips aren't exactly a basic nutritional requirement.
