Directors of HMV are this evening locked in talks about the retailer’s future amid growing concern that it could become the latest big-name high street chain to succumb to the flat-lining British economy.

HMV is absolutely class for boxsets and DVDs around Christmas.
90% of my Christmas shopping gets done in there.

Very sad stuff! bought few items in HMV over Christmas in Liffey Valley and Grafton Street and saw how hard the staff worked! One of the staff in Liffey Valley spent ages digging out a Far Cry 3 PC Collectors edition that wasn't claimed while it was manic, very nice of him and was an absolute gent, really sucks balls if he doesn't get paid for genuine hard work!

Yes but they would still be the property of HMV until HMV default on their payment to their supplier. Then the property reverts to the supplier. Of course their contract terms may be different but that seems to be standard business practice.

I dont see it as being lazy....would much rather receive cash than a useless/ unwanted gift. But some people think a voucher is better than cash...no....just give cash!

Dreadfully sad news for the staff of HMV Ireland if that is true. I'm surprised they have made the decision on the Irish stores so quickly.

It basically means the Irish market has no shops other than Xtravision to buy CDs and movies.

Agreed that HMV's business model wasnt adapting to changing media forms.

But how many businesses closed down in the last 2 years? All those factories, small shops etc. They didnt all have bad business models.

Staff in the Crescent shopping centre in Limerick have staged a sit in as they have been told that they might not get the pay that they are owed. Seems a bit unfair seeing as the uk staff have all been guaranteed their wages

Ugh, exact same thing happened with LaSenza. They got a lot of support and won after 4 or so days. Good on them, if they can pay 4,200 UK staff then they can pay 300 more.

I've always found Golden Discs to be poorly stocked to be honest, while Tower have high prices and not much in terms of a varied stock.

I'm really disappointed by this, always enjoyed dropping off in HMV Grafton/Henry St to have a browse on a Friday after work before heading home for the weekend.

If there is a demand from the consumer to pay a premium for the opportunity to buy music on the high street, someone will take that opportunity and replace HMV. However, lot of people (myself included) liked to go in there and just browse and then go home and buy the cheaper product online.

At least ye have golden discs and tower records in Dublin. Galway has nothing expect for maybe extra vision for dvds and smyths for games and music??? nothing really.

HMV was my shop. That is where I went to.

HMV is going to be very badly and sadly missed.

Tesco sell CD's and games and stuff do they not?probably one of the reasons HMV are finished.

Hope the staff get whatever they are owed,Irish staff always get treated shabbily in comparison to the UK,La Senza and Game etc.

Consumers decided to buy vouchers from HMV and in doing so accepted to offer credit to HMV. A lot of people dont seem to understand that is all a voucher is. The company has been in serious difficulties for years and before Christmas it issued statement which indicated things were only getting worse. Despite the public knowing the company was in trouble, some consumers decided to give credit to the company, they took a risk and they lost. I'm fed you with this attitude of moaning and complaining. People made a bad decision to buy the vouchers, get over it and accept some personal responsibility for buying or holding on to the pieces of paper.
