Stouts in Galway question

Hey, just wondering about which pubs one can find a few of the stouts in Galway.

1. Before I moved, I had a few pints of what I'm pretty sure was Black Rock Stout (from Dungarvan) in the Oslo in Salthill on draught. Anyone know if they still have it on draught?

2. Can you get that Black Rock Stout on draught in any of the bars in town? Salt House perhaps?

3. Where can you get Murphy's on draught?

4. Where can you get Beamish on draught?

I think monroes have beamish on draught. Salt house has a wide range and s pub to check out

afaik None of the beery pubs have Dungarvan beers as regulars, just as occasional guest beers... I've seen Dark Arts on in the Salt House and Oslo very regularly and of course they offer their own Stormy Port...

No idea about the Beamish or Murphys...

Beamish is sold in most pubs really, usually a few cent cheaper than Guinness. It was always one of the super cheap pints in the Hole in the Wall (€2 I think, prob more now) but you don't sound like someone who would go there..

Haven't seen Murphys anywhere.

I recall having Murhy's somewhere in town but that was long ago. Freeney's maybe?
Bier house, Salt house and Oslo would be the places to check.

You cant get black rock on draught anywhere. Dungarvan dont keg their beers. Bottle or cask only.

Salt House recently added Porterhouse Plain and its lovely. Beats Guinness murphys or beamish hands down.

Last I remember The Kings Head had Murphys. Twas a good year at least last I was in there though.

Salt house has Trouble Brewing Stout on draft.

Murphy's and Tig Ceolis used to have Murphys (around 4/5 years ago at least). Not sure if they still have it but probably do, I remember a few of the regulars drinking it in Murphy's

Both still have it. As do the quays.

Fun activity to do if you're out with one of these stout hipsters: swap their pint with a Guinness and watch them rant about how much nicer the pint their drinking is than Guinness. Worked twice for me anyway :pac:

No idea about the Beamish or Murphys...

Is Stormy Port an Oslo production? Maybe that's what I had there a couple of years ago. Pretty sure it wasn't O'Hara's.

Haven't seen Murphys anywhere.

That's good news about Beamish. Nice to have choices in most pubs.

I remember having it in Murphy's on High Street a few years ago but had a feeling that they were going to stop. Twas a grand pint in there.

Are you calling me "one of these stout hipster"? Would you consider all ales the same, or all lagers? There's a big difference between Murphy's and Guinness. No pretension about it. Just taste.

Brilliant. If it's half as good as Galway Hooker I'll be delighted. GH was all I drank before I left Galway a couple of years ago. Can't wait to taste this Boneparte stuff. Thanks for that.

Yes. I agree. I kind of compare Murphys vs Guinness as Coffee (with milk and sugar!) vs Black Tea. Guinness is a bit more bitter while Murphy's is a little sweeter.

I don't mind Guinness, but there are definitely lots of other nicer stouts around.

Yes, it's made by the in-house brewery at The Oslo (Galway Bay Brewery). They also recently launched a milk chocolate stout, which was on keg in The Oslo last weekend (labelled 'strange brew'). It's well worth trying if you get a chance.

I agree fully regarding Guinness, btw. I will drink it if there aren't alternatives but I prefer most of the other stouts mentioned in this thread.

Strange brew has been on the go for quite a while now (first time i noticed it was when they rebranded about 12 months ago but I don't get down to Galway too much....) It's a great drop, much better than the stormy port imo....

Yes but, rather confusingly, the beer they sell under the 'strange brew' name changes every couple of months. It's currently the chocolate stout but before that it was a brown ale.

Aaah, I just though it was slightly different with each batch, not that it was a different beer altogether...

Its a seasonal rotational. First batch was a pale ale (later became full sail) second was an amber ale then a brown ale and now a milk stout.

Murphys is awful tack, bar man pulled a few pints of it recently by mistake for a few of us instead of Guinness we all took one mouthful and asked the barman straight away if he pulled the wrong stuff, I forced mine down as the bar man replaced it with a free Guinness so I drank both the others had theirs thrown down the sink and this is in cork where it would have a good flow.

From what I've tasted of Bemish it's not much better. Guinness is in a different league.

Not in the city but they have Murphy's in the Galway Bay Hotel bar, spotted it a couple of months ago.

Beamish is delicious!! So much flavour, nice and dry and a little hoppy. Plus it seems to be very consistent. Guinness varies an awful lot from place to place, but beamish is always pretty much the same.

Update. Now that I'm back home, tigh Choili don't have Murphys anymore. Nor do Freeneys.

Murphys still have Murphys.

Just said I'd update in case anyone searches and finds this thread.

+1 for Galway Hooker's Bonaparte Stout. Only on sale in Tig Neachtain's I believe. Really nice dark chocolately stout.

Re: Murphy's v Guinness v Beamish...

Murphy's: Caramely, sweet and pretty flavoursome all round.

Guinness: Thin, but a decent flavour. Does the job if there's nothing else decent on tap, but otherwise I avoid it.

Beamish: Much hoppier than Guinness or Murphy's. I find the taste a little overpowering (despite being a big fan of hoppy beers). I buy it every once in a blue moon, for a change of scenery.

Bonaparte Stout is on sale in Bierhaus as "Bierhaus x Hooker - Dark Haus Stout" or "BH001" stout @ €4.10 a pint. It's not a bad stout at all at all.

When Hooker move to their new place in Oranmore (10 times current production capacity, right now they can't expand their range because they can't even meet current demand and as a result can only produce their Pale Ale in large amounts) the lads at Bierhaus and The Hookers lads are planning on doing a few brews together exclusively for Bierhaus and the lads from the pub will be invloved in the design and brewing for the beers, looking forward to that happening towards the end of the year.

They haven't moved yet. They still have to install the new kit in Oranmore and then more production. They are in the middle of buying the new kit at the moment afaik, should be all moved by the end of the summer.

I once wrote to the owners and they agreed then to a visit from boards.
Maybe something we can revisit after the move.

The lads are fierce friendly in fairness, I'm sure they'd have no problem showing people around.

Chris @ Galway Bay Brewery is also only too happy to show people around and even let them come along on brew days if they ask nicely.
