96-year-old woman hospitalised after Donegal burglary

I hope these men are found and given a right good beating.

Lowest form of Human Beings you could find. Hope they get whats coming to them.

A 96-year-old woman has been taken to Letterkenny General Hospital following an aggravated burglary in Co Donegal this morning.
A man wearing dark clothing and a balaclava had entered her house in Aghilly through the kitchen window.
He went into her bedroom where she was sleeping and demanded money.
He assaulted the woman, punched her in the ribs and gagged her and left with her handbag containing some money and bank cards.
The woman alerted gardaí by activating her panic button at 12.30am.
Two men wearing dark clothes and speaking with local accents were seen leaving the area afterwards and heading in the direction of Tullydish.
The woman was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital for observation but her injuries are not thought to be serious.

True, The above link has some fairly shocking statistics..

To be honest, unless you know absolutely nothing about criminality [and I an far from being any where expert at it] there is not a lot of shocking stats there. That is even allows for a lot of the low level burglaries that are not reported.

I agree, but the fact is crime is not out of control, as another postter emotivley claimed. That Ireland is one of the safest places in Europe to live is always going to be of little comfort to any victim of crime, but that doesn't change the facts.

Any crime is a concern, I'm just glad I live in one of the safest, low crime , countries in the EU and OECD, and I'm even gladder that I don't need to blow the facts out of proportion in an emotive rant.

Indeed. Nobody thinks we should feel sorry for vicious thugs because they had actual hard lives (don't know where the corn flakes stuff is coming from), just that this could lead to them being vicious thugs.

Tell me about it, I stay in my mothers when I can for many reasons, one being to give the impression that she is not on her own. A neighbour who used to work with my Dad was done for over 4k while he was at home a few weeks back.

However, I don't think it can be realistically described as being out of control.

A man I know well chased a burglar in his car and ran over him thus ending up in court. It cost him a lot of money and he was very lucky he didn't do jail himself. The burglar was awarded 150k but he nor any of his friends ever went back to that house since or are likely to. Many of them deliberately target the elderly to avoid being taken on.

Remember we are supposed to be the ones who have ethics, so how can we ethically stand over such treatment.

The bigest issue is that the justice system continuously seems to release very violent criminals while clogging up prisons with people who have not paid fines, licenses etc etc..

We're wasting money jailing many of those people when other arrangements like garnishing orders to their social welfare / wages would make more sense.

I'm also not sure what the point of jailing drug addicts who commit petty crimes is. We should probably have a system that offers them compulsory (serious) treatment rather than jail.

We could probably reduce the prison population, keep the prisoners in the more modern prisons only, reduce costs and reduce re-offending rates.

I'm not quite sure what the current system is up to. The aim should be to avoid re-offending and keep very dangerous people locked up.

If you physically attack someone in their own home or just at random on the street, you're a serious danger to society.

We can have all the ethics we like but the reality of the situation is that we are running a system that has bad, over-crowded prisons and where jail time's being given to all the wrong people while many of the people who should be in jail seem to get very short sentences / never get sent at all.

Aim should be for a smaller prison population, and plenty of space for the most violent offenders.

This is one of the most despicable and sickening cases ever.
I hope the victim can get through this. Inflicting this on people of much less than 96 has proven fatal in the past. I hope too that the victim will go to a safe place for the rest of days.
I hope that the culprits are apprehended and dealt with severely. Attacking a vulnerable victim like this should be seen as an aggravating factor. These guys deserve a 10 year sentence.

If this low life scum is caught, they will feel no remorse and will go to prison, which they won't bat an eyelid at.

Ireland needs to get tough with criminals, hard labour would make them think twice about re-offending.

Do people really think this hard labour crap would work, the same with whatever the various getting tough with criminals will prevent re-offending? One of the more petty house breakers I used to work with was caught doing a farm house. Now I could not stand over what happen next, but it involved being tied up by 3 grown men, held for the night in a barn/outbuilding various threats with legally held fire arms a good hiding which involved a few sessions during that night.

I remember how frightened that guy was, however, he was back at it within a few days.

Now I don't claim to have the answers here, but I do know that certain things are going to really make much of an impact on the issue. That particular individual has now got his life back on track, went back to education, now has a dregee and as far as I know is currently working and now longer involved in anything like that. Knocking the bollocks out of him certainly didn't do the trick.

You would wonder about this old lady though, will she ever be able to stay in her own home again? The impact of such a event is so far reaching, at that age such an experience could really set a person back, hopefully she will be able to recover from this.

Hard labour might not stop them from re-offending, but it sure is motivation in the right direction.

Fact is, prison in Ireland is not a punishment to hardened criminals. Hard labour is no cake walk and is constructive punishment in my eyes. It also gives something back to the community other than a large taxpayers bill to put a roof over these criminals head.

Knew of a lad who broke into the "wrong" house in Crossmaglen. He got his hair off with a blow torch. Never tried it again.
It's not the way though.

I was wrong. The previous disproportionate amount of traveller attacks on the elderly in rural Ireland lead me to reckon they probably did this one too. If they were not involved in a disproportionate amount of previous attacks I would not have made the connection.

But they were. Hence I am not losing much sleep over pointing the finger at the wrong people.

Actually that article states that Gardai do NOT believe the same persons were responsible for the attack on the 96 year old lady as were responsible for the other attacks, seperate gangs.

I don't get why they had to hit her. I know they're scum but an old lady would have just handed over all she had our of fear. What did they gain through violence?
