One run of memtest - that's the one from memtest.org, not Microsoft - usually shows up any errors, if I remember it correctly. You could run it a few times to be sure, but there's no need for like a 6 hours job.

I've never really heard the speakers beep on an on system apart from when you mash the keyboard too many times on a slow system.

Even if memtest doesn't pick up anything, you could try taking out one pair of RAM and run it for a few days and see. If nothing happens, swap in the other pair. Is it 8GB? You'd be fine with 4GB at any one time. 2GB could get a bit choppy.

I've heard other people say Memtest will fail when in real-world your memory is fine.

Bit of a random notion I just had.

Instead of using a fan, could CPUs not be connected directly to the case of a PC so the entire case acts as a heatsink? Essentially, turn the motherboard upside-down or at least the CPU mounting.

Then you'd just have a huge surface area radiating the heat directly into the air.

a few HTPC cases do that. problem is they're not very efficient, so a 30W CPU is recommended.

lads the clamps for headshots loop arrived today, eventually, so I drained the loop and tried to take off the tubes... and I can't.. they're not budging no matter how hard I pull. I'm worried I'll stretch the tube and don't have much extra to replace it with. any advice?

Can you warm them up slightly with a hairdryer? I find the warmer they are the softer they become.

Do you have enough slack that you could make a slight cut in the tubing, right at the bottom, so you could pull it off?

You could also try heating it to expand it, or if you're really stuck you could try a drop or two of washing up liquid in the loop. I've heard a couple of people recommend this, but personally I can't see how it would be of any use, other than to gunk up your blocks.

I actually did take out one set of ram sticks with my 7850 (I'm not too sure if they were of the same set or not) and the flashing still continued so I'm not too sure if that's causing the problem :-\

Motherboard is quite expensive, an mATX, which unless you have a small case, you don't need. Something like this is a good proven board, and much cheaper.

Is there anything in particular you want on your motherboard?

Hey mono I uninstalled steam like you suggested... did that delete all my games??? I thought it just deleted the front end of steam and left games intact? I have no internet in my house, so no cloud saves, my skyrim files, oh god... I just reinstalled steam using my work connection and none of my games seem to be installed. A lot of my SSD space seems to be taken up though... but no steam common folder for all my games...

And also does anyone have a good guide for utilising the second hard-drive feature on steam? Every link navigates me to the RPS one, but that seems to have been written by someone who is not a noob like me... hard to know where he says to change stuff.
I have the option to select another drive to install to, but when I create an empty folder for it and navigate to that, it says it failed to add new steam folder. But it does actually create a steamapps folder. Its just empty.

My brother went one year, and really enjoyed it. Not into PCs at all though. It was cars and the like that he went to it for. I've never been, but from what he was saying (and he could have given completely the wrong impression let's be quite clear) there wasn't much of that sort of thing there.

I went to it in the RDS a few years ago and I don't remember seeing any computer tech. It's enjoyable but I won't be doing it again.

Was at the one in the RDS years ago, it was OK-very little PC tech though. Went to the Citywest last year as I got a free ticket-not as good, few decent cars, some guy doing half decent stunts on a motor bike and a full sized tank were the highlights for me. Again SFA PC wise, lots of stuff like airsoft guns and all that nonsense.

Plenty of pram faces covered in fake tan and hot pants too if that's your thing;)

Tracksuit aficionados were well represented as well.

Saw that in the comments of the Engadget Steam on Linux article. Very, very cool. When I get the new rig built, I'll be reformatting my OS drive and throwing 12.10 on it. Can't wait to see how things run.

Yes, you just won't be able to launch it.

I don't think the nVidia driver will come to you via the update manager unless you have already installed it yourself. When you install Ubuntu it comes with an open source driver for nVidia GPUs because nVidia refuse to make their own drivers open source.

So to get that new driver you will have to do a manual install ... I think :P
Not to well up on all of this stuff. If you have previously installed the nVidia drivers I don't know when they will be pushed out via the update manager but they are available on the nVidia website now.

No, I meant install it again as in run the installer again to repair it.

I'm not sure what happens to your files if you uninstall. I would copy out the steamapps folder first if I wanted a complete reinstall. Some of the things don't go into the common folder and stay under your username, e.g., steamapps/andy.

If they are gone, there's little that you can do on an SSD. With a HDD, some files can be recovered, but it's not really how SSDs work.

Everything seems to be intact Mono no worries

I would rather use an official solution to allocate drives, will keep looking for a more thorough guide.
