I briefly worked in a large book makers here that have alot of outlets up north.

I got talking to an employee from the north and she explained how the machines make up the majority of there revenue and how popular they are but also how many people are completely addicted to them.

Anyone in Oz will know how popular the pokie machines over there are!

I like playing the slots once in a while, it's fun. Then again I'd play maybe 20 quid max, you see fellas sit down next to you and throw a grand into the machines like it's nothing :eek:

True, but that takes time.

You can lose everything you own on the turn of a card and you're left alive to face the consequences.

I don't think one form of serious addiction is any worse than any other.

They all fúck their victims up in their own horrible way.

Well I know that one of the casinos I've been to pays you in the form of a ticket, on which it says "I certify that I am receiving an amount no greater than the amount I've spent" or something similar. I think that's how some of them get away with it. The other way is by making themselves a "members club" where you have to sign up and get a card. I don't really know how they get around the law by doing that but it must be a loophole of some sort.

Poker machines in pubs are another. Ramblers Rest in Ballybrack had them(no idea if they are still there, been years since I drank there), and the owner at the time said the poker machines takings paid for the wages of all the bar staff.

I enjoy a bet, I dont bet to excess though, and dont gamble money I cant afford to lose.

If people want to blow their cash on Slot machines (a form of gambling that requires no skill whatsoever) let them do so in the casinos that someone mentioned already.

Just keep them out of the betting shops. Betting on a horse does involve a degree of thought and study of form.

The use of slot machines is not a form of betting. So keep them out of betting shops.

In the last few years there's been a major increase of visitors to Las Vegas whom go to casinos wearing adult nappies so that they don't have go to the toilet while they're at the slot machines.

Any addiction is a horrible thing no matter what it is, you feel powerless against your urge to go for it. Drink, Drugs, Gambling, Porn, Food. All be it Gambling and Porn don't kill you, it can cause serious depression which is just as dangerous as the others, could lead to suicide.

Help is out there and if your in one of the positions you aint the first and you won't be the last.

Just never abuse anything is the golden rule.

to be fair i dont think many people will agree porn will cause depression
if anything it makes me smile when the deed is done

The problem is, when it becomes an addiction it's not for enjoyment anymore it is to make yourself feel normal, your body cannot function if it hasn't got it's high, with gambling it's the constant high of maybe I will win with the next bet, roll of the dice or next spin. Then when you do win, the body get's it's rush and all logic is gone out the window, you might have won a tenner and yet spent 100. It's where me and you can see the line to quit while we are ahead, be it stopping before we lose more money or have reached a point we are up money.

The bookies and machine will always win in the long run, you win 500 one day and over the course of 5 years you could lose 1500..

There has been studies done that has shown a link between the two. Your brain releases a short high when you 'hit the spot'. Some people get addicted to this and cannot leave the house, real relationships break down and starts into depression.

Never seen a bookie on a bicycle.I have been to Vegas.Their whole business model is if you keep playing for long enough,you will lose.Thats why casinos have no windows ,clocks etc.EVERYONE loses eventually
