Two children killed while out walking with father.

The incident happened at about 1.45pm on the N17, on the Milltown side of Tuam.
It is understood a car struck a father and his two children as he was walking them on the hard shoulder.
Gardaí say the two children were both girls, one aged two-years-old and other aged two months.
They were taken by ambulance to University College Hospital in Galway, where they were pronounced dead.
The male driver and the children's father were also taken to University Hospital Galway. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The N17 at Dunmore is closed, pending the completion of an examination of the scene, and diversions are in place.
Gardaí say the road is closed and diversions are in place. They have asked for witnesses to the crash to contact Tuam Garda Station on 093 70840.

This is so tragic my heart goes out to the parents of these babies I hope the father is ok. It's hard to believe you could be out walking and for this to happen.

RIP to the little girls.

This accident really hit home for me - my family house is very near where this accident happened, my father would do his runs around that time on a Sunday and he has a heart condition. As soon as I saw the news, I rang home to make sure it was not him.. thankfully it wasn't and he had not even heard about the accident.

But there is someone somewhere whose father it was.

Can you imagine being both the family and the person who crashed in to them? The Galway Advertiser reported that he had fallen ill behind the wheel and then later, that he had had a heart attack.

Imagine knowing you had survived a heart attack and a car crash, but had taken the life of two children. My thoughts and prayers go to everyone involved.

This happened literally at the entrance of my estate where the family lived(going by the RTE picture on the website). The road is decent enough, at least compared to the stretch of road a few km away where the 4 college students lost their lives. Such a horrible thing to happen to such young children.

Edit: there is a story going round re the events that happened just before the crash but I won't speculate on thread obviously.

Such a tragic accident, literally all involved were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like others I can't stop thinking about it. Drove past the spot where it happened earlier on my way home and just broke down, all there is to mark the accident is the tape and traffic cone around the fence where the car hit. Going to return to leave flowers tomorrow in memory of heaven's two new angels tonight.

My thoughts and prayers are with the two little girls, their father who witnessed something that no parent should ever witness especially while going about a simple walk on a nice day. Their mother is in my heart. As a mother myself I cannot imagine what she is going through. When I think of how many times I said to my husband to take the baby out for a walk so I could get an hour's peace of a day when my daughter was that young, something like this is unimagineable. I hope and pray that their memories of the girls and the happiness they brought to each other as a family will keep them going. The driver of the car, the poor man, nobody sets out on the road to cause such harm, I feel for him so much also, as well as the Gardai and emergency services and the staff of UCHG involved.

The area that this happened in is a straight stretch of road where there are always people walking on the wide hard shoulder as the visibility is good for drivers. I have often walked my daughter in her buggy on a hard shoulder as sometimes it is the only way to reach a destination or to get out for fresh air together. The father cannot be vindicated or blamed in any way for this, there isn't a footpath or a designated walking area in the vicinity of where it happened.

Its impossible to imagine the absolute heart break this family are feeling right now, this poor man got up this morning, probably had breakfast with his two little girls, chatted to them and later on decided to take them both for a Sunday afternoon stroll, probably delighted to be able to bring his little new addition to the family with him in her pram only for this to happen.
I hope this was a tragic accident where the driver wasnt drunk or speeding or both because it would be so unfair for two little lives to be taken so violently because of someone elses pure idiotic stupidity or arrogance.
The father of these two little girls will probably never forgive himself for taking them out, eventhough theres absolutely no blame that can be put on him for his actions and lets not forget the poor mother in all of this.
As for the man driving the car, if he was drunk, speeding or both I hope that not only will the law of the land deal with him with the utmost severity but I hope also that he can never forgive himself for what he has done today and has to live with that guilt for the rest of his days.

It was being reported that the driver fell ill.

We had a guy pull in in front of our house one day. He had a heart attack and died in his jeep. Thankfully, he was able to pull over safely and not put any of us, our niehgbours and any other passers by at any harm.
Unfortunately, the Gilmore family and the driver didn't have that luck with them today.

If you live outside a big urban area, chances are you have to walk on a road if you want to get somewhere by foot. This is perfectly legal and normally safe. Most places do not have foot paths.

I'm sure he will always feel guilty for what happened regardless of the circumstances. I can't imagine he set of in his car today with the intentions of killing two little girls.

It does make sense. If it's someone's fault, it's not an accident. I'm not talking about this incident specifically, just in general.

A drivers and parents worst nightmares in one tragic, tragic accident. The lives of many people have been forever altered today and two little girls have been lost. How anyone involved will get over this I don't know. I am not a parent but as a driver I can honestly say that killing someone is my worst fear, the thought makes me feel physically sick.

May these two little ones rest in peace.

This incident is incorrectly referred to as an accident. RTA has been replaced by RTC ( road traffic collision) the definition of accident tends to suggest an incident that happened by chance: an unforeseen event or one without an apparent cause.
Someone did something that contributed to this tragic event, it's in the Irish mentality that we don't want to blame someone but unfortunately the likelihood is that human error resulted in the tragic deaths. The heart attack theory is possible but unlikely. Carelessness and stupidly are more then likely a factor that people are reluctant to mention.
Again tragic beyond words, lets all be careful out there for our sake and other also.
