Yes, that's the same drive: WD20EARX.

Also worth considering are the WD Reds, although they are more expensive. Designed for long term RAID use and longer warranty, although probably not vastly different to the green drives.

My battle.net account was locked for "suspicious activity". I thought it was spam at first, so I didn't click any of the links, but when I hovered over them they looked legit so I went to battle.net in Chrome (without clicking on any links of course) and sure enough, it was locked. Feeling a bit annoyed that they don't even have a section to view what IPs are logging into your account.

Clearly they found it suspicious that you were poking around looking for IP addresses that logged into your account.

Actually, I was cleaning out my junk email address box a while ago and realised that I had a load of various emails about my battle.net account. All kinds of things like it was flagged as suspicious or newsletters etc.

The only thing is that I don't have a battle.net account! Damn, phishing emails look so convincing these days!

Oh for goodness sake. Sure this last generation has vastly improved on idle consumption and cards are getting more efficient at what they are doing. They're taking it into consideration if you give them a few more years.

I bet this has f**k all to do with saving the trees and animals and is just another way to shake down tech companies for money a la Microsoft browser farce.

This is such epic fail by by Nordic hardware it is not even funny. The regulations are basically certain maximum kW per year allowances that an entire prebuilt system (which may or may not includes discreet GPUs) must meet in its low power/sleep idle states.

It has absolutely nothing whatsover do do with limiting the GPUs cards themselves.

The actual proposal can be found here read from page 13 onwards, Annex I and II in particular.

In 1.1.2, it states that G7 GPUs are not to exceed 225KWh/yr, and that each additional card in a system cannot exceed 133KWh/yr. I'm not too sure what these numbers correlate to in real-world usage, but surely this has some impact?

Also, even if this is only pre-built systems, we're still likely to get some of the fallout given that a lot of NVIDIA's and AMD's GPUs do end up in pre-built systems, and they'll have to be catered for none-the-less.

In the document they appear to calculate kWh / year assuming a mixture of 55% Power Off (Poff), 40% Idle (PIdle) and 5% Sleep (PSleep) modes.

According to AnandTech a HD7970 idles at around 15W and has a long idle (zero core) power usage of 3W.

So a very rough back of a napkin calculation for the HD7970 using the most basic formula from Annex II of the PDF, suggests that even now, a powerful card like the HD7970 is probably comfortably under even the more stringent 30 month target of 80 kWh / year for G7 class cards.

kWh/ year of HD 7970 = (8760/1000) * (0.55 * 3 + 0.45 * 15)
= 73.584 kWh / year.

Thats a good post, he has definatley hit the nail on the head about the 320gbps. No t sure about him using 0w in his HD7970 calculation though as it seems to me it should be the lowest 'powered on' state of the GPU not it being off completely.

I mean everything will use 0w when completely powered down so it doesn't really make sense otherwise

I have an almost 3 year old Samsung Spinpoint F3 that has died.

I've created an RMA but the Seagate packing requirement is endcaps to hold the HDD(in the plastic shell container).
I never received the HDD with endcaps when I bought it so not sure whether I need to buy them or whether I can wrap the HDD in bubble wrap and place in a box.

Anybody any experience? Or even better endcaps and box they don't need for it!!

I'm pretty sure I have some of those end caps. No boxes of the right size though as I had use them for other stuff!

You could have them if you wanted them, although I'm not walking to Laois.

Edit: I found a pair of them. I'm not sure if the plastic container would fit in there too. I think they might be for the bar drive in the anti-static bag. I know I got a Samsung drive a while ago and I probably didn't throw out the plastic container, so maybe I can test it out.

Edit 2: Actually, I don't think you need the external plastic shell, just an anti-static bag.

Can anyone here give me some help with a issue opening ports? Tried every thing I can get my hands on with regards to guides, updated router firmware, calls to ISP, and on and on.

Who is your internet provider and what modem do you have?

All you should have to do is type 192.168.(0/1/2 depends on router).1 to get into your router settings. From there just find port forwarding (or something similar sounding) and you're good.

Specify a start and end port (the same, if opening one), the external IP and the internal IP, and whether to allow TCP or UDP traffic through.
