Hi all, I've recently returned from the middle east where I taught primary math for 5 years. I'm a qualified secondary math teacher but would love to work with kids at primary level. I was wondering if anybody knows of any links to any sites that would give me more info on how to get into this line of work?

You'd have to do a post grad to qualify as a primary teacher,jobs are very hard to come by due to the high numbers being trained for fewer and fewer jobs.

Yeah I had thought about that but I want to specifically get in to primary maths....as in working with special needs / gifted and talented students.......programs that are focused on math alone at primary level, even curriculum development. I don't want to teach all subjects at primary level.....just specifically maths; I'm trying to find out what might be out there but there seems to not be a lot of information around.

As far as I know, any of the primary teaching qualifications (undergrad or postgrad) are general qualifications which qualify you to teach all eleven subjects. Not sure about the postgrad courses, but the undergrad also have a large number of other subjects in the course - methodology of the teaching subjects, developmental psychology, etc.

I've never heard of a teacher being taken on to teach one specific subject in a primary school, it's hard to see how it would work. Maths at primary level is used throughout the curriculum as there is a big focus on integration, especially with the new numeracy and literacy push. It's not just confined to a specific maths class at a set time.

Sorry to be so negative, you sound enthusiastic about the subject which is great to hear.

There are no specialist teachers at primary level. There is also no official provision made for exceptionally able students(don't start me!) It is most unlikely you would get a maths only job in primary, unless a private school would be interested.
