Why did we all buy HD tvs?

Nothing is in HD!!! Given how long HD has been around I thought a few programs a week would be in HD but nope, nada. Unless you are a millionaire and can afford to have Sky HD.

For the rest of us, buying a HD tv was a complete fcuking waste of money.

Sick of it.

Games look absolutely terrible on SDTV. It's even worse when you try and connect a laptop. The vast majority of movies and TV shows out now are available in HD in some form or another and the difference is big enough to warrant buying the TV.

Watch a lot of car shows from the youtube on mine, all HD (or 720p). Some lad in iffey valley selling UPC with what looked like 360p @ 25fps on all his fancy Hi-Def LED TVs. Ejitry of the highest order.

If its just for supposed HD TV viewing, people are just better off with cheaper HD Ready TV's which show a maximum on screen of the 720 resolution.

They already can and do. RTE2 HD broadcasts in 1080i format

Most sports and US TV series anyway. Some stuff is just upscaled to 1080 though

Outside broadcasts only, GAA, Champions league etc, nothing in HD from the studio as they're not ready yet

Sky also broadcast in 1080i afaik, which for all intensive purposes is the same quality as 720p to the eye, full 1080p resolution broadcasts which biggins is referring to are many years away as the average viewer will never notice the difference.

RTE also seem to use a crazy low bitrate as the quality is rubbish compared to sky hd, ITV hd and BBC hd broadcasts. Bitrate is just as important than the resolution used.

It's a much higher bitrate on satellite than on Saorview

"Full HD" 1080p is just the latest step in electronics companies taking your cash by deliberately drip-feeding new tech to the market. First it was ordinary plasmas, then hd ready, then lcd, then back to plasma, then 1080p, then led, then 3d.
4k can already be bought for serious money-expect the mass-market versions to be released in the next 12 months. Apparently this will be indistinguishable from film so I may consider finally getting a projector then.

I'm with you there.. the bit rate on Saorview could be a lot better. On the rare few instances where bit rates have been good, I could definitely notice an improvement compared to 720 broadcasts.

To the best of my knowledge, most HD TVs sold are only capable of achieving 1080i, so it probably wouldn't be worth broadcasting progressive formats at the moment. And as you say, it's difficult to even tell the difference between the two for most part. I notice it during football games however, on 1080i teles the 'ball trail' is far more apparent than on a 1080p TV.

I only pirate HD media....I figure you might as well get the best quality.

But it's a shame that there isn't a better alternative.

I bought a 3d LED tv because I have all the HD channels on Sky, not a millionaire but a good TV with the HD is my treat to myself.
There must be over 60 HD channels now.

Screw $ky, get Saorview (RTE Two HD) and Freesat (BBC 1 HD and BBC HD, ITV1 HD, Channel 4 HD) and no messing. Simples.

It's not so much a marketing plan to make as much money as possible as much as it is technological limitations. If someone had invented an affordable super-thin LED TV with excellent colours and excellent response to motion back when HD began to kick off, they would have dominated the market for years on end. It simply hasn't been possible up until now to provide Full HD TVs with excellent display that don't cost in excess of €5000.

Everyone wants to sell the most in their market segment. They start off by an innovation or new feature that no other product has. Once the market gets saturated with products containing that feature, certain manufacturers start reducing their price to increase their market share. Then the cycle repeats.

TV3 can't get even standard definition right, all overlit and washed out. No wonder everyone including Vincenzo and Martin the Wacky Weatherman wears so much slap they look like clowns.

I got one because it was a reasonably cheap (€500) way of getting a nice big screen to watch shit on. I was quite taken with the motion interpolation too, which I know a lot of people hate, but I don't watch soap operas so it doesn't remind me of one.

I never bought one, my TV is 1976 and it is the dogs bollicks, I can turn the color way up and it is super vibrant, when I am watching nature shows the grass looks fantrippy green, the cows come in from the field just to lick the screen,

they swear it produces more milk.

Most people have consoles,or laptops, its easy to connect in thru hdmi.OLD
sdtvs ,tend to have curved screens, and hdtvs take up less space,
the new digital, terrestials channels will look better on a hdtv.
i would,nt like to be watching dvds on an old crt, tube tv.
32 inch tvs are now quiet cheap, around 300 euros.
And now tvs will come with 3d modes,and apps, youtube, netflix ,etc built in , and you,ll be able to install new ones .
of course theres always ,early adopters that paid 2grand for a 32inch tv.
i always wait a few years for the price to fall,on the latest gadget.
A 32 INCH 720p tv would be fine for most people, unless you have a subscription for
sky movies.
i,d say most people dont know you can watch tv in hd without paying a sub to sky.
they have a hdtv connected to a skybox thru a scart cable, ,or they have a nonhd skybox.

Even when programs and sports are in 720 compared to the standard channel version there is no comparison.

P.S. I find sound to be a huge difference, which i never realised before getting it, watching sport its like the crowd are in the room.
