Is it just me or is there somewhat of a stigma associated with not drinking alcohol in a pub? for starters, non-alcoholic drinks work out much more expensive per litre for litre than booze.

For instance, a "bottle" of coke, 200ml, is €2.30 in my local, whereas a pint, 568 ml, is only €3.50 (even with the sharp government levy included). So I think they are making more profit on soft-drinks than alcohol.

When I ordered a non-alcoholic Erdinger, the barman looked at me like I was from Mars. I haven't been drinking for a while, as I want to curtail what I have been consuming, but it always seems to be the same reaction from my fellow peers "Oh, you're not drinking, why??", or the infamous, "What's the point of drinking beer if there's no alcohol in it?" .. Ehhh I drink it because I like the taste and I am driving home ....

Pubs have to pay for licence to sell alcohol so everything they sell is more expensive than "a shop"..
like saying why is it cheaper to buy 8 cans than 2or3 pints..

Drink pints of cordial if your driving, would be free in most locals, nobody's going to have 6 pints of coke while everyone else has 6 pints of beer, the fizzy drinks would mess you up more, even if the barman does charge you it's still going to cost flip all, change from a tenner for a night out anywhere is a winner.

There are plenty of coffee shops around so there is no need to go into a pub if you do not intend to drink.

So I drink in a coffeeshop (which are normally closed at that time) at 9 o'clock on my own while my friends are in the pub ??

Friends? If people who are trying to force you to drink when you don't want to are your friends I wonder what your enemies are like. Why would you want to associate with such people?

At a guess I would say that because most Irish people, especially people under 30, have an unhealthy attitude towards alcohol. So associate with people who drinks or have very few friends? And most cafes in Dublin are horrible (chains have no character and bad coffee) or closes too early.

Also Id be in the same situation when it comes to drinking with mates , if I said I wasn't drinking I'd hear "why aren't you drinking" a million times on the night lol , all you can do is have strong will power (your liver will thank you) , but don't stop hanging out with your friends just because you don't drink , stay sociable , people need to realise drink isn't the be all and end all of socialising and meeting new people.

There is no stigma ..I order Erdinger for my mate who fare play has said enough is enough. does not overtly affect me..but I tend to think people not drinking have an advantage over drunk people..on a different level somehow.Its amazing the amount of times the barman will give you the alcoholic version of this drink..

If you normally drink and then all of a sudden decide to stop or cut back dramatically you have to expect at least some people to ask 'why ya not drinkin ya soft cunt?' especially if they're drunk and their inhibitions are lower.

I don't normally drink and when I do it's only one or two pints so my friends hardly ever mention my lack of lock even though most of them are absolute lushes.
