As for someone calling a Keane a defensive midfielder, near the end of his career he was a little but more defensive but mainly he was box to box. Check out any of the old games on Sky or Setanta at the moment to see him in his prime.

Check out the the FA Cup 4th round in 99 against Liverpool. In my opinion Keanes greatest game for United, not Juventus. Everythng came through him in that game.

Yup. Its amazing how some people only remember the latter parts of a players career. People tell me Keane was always a DM mid but I reply that its just his legs were going so he needed to curtail his bursting forward.

Same with Scholesy, he tends to sit and dictate a lot more whereas his early career he would always bomb on and take a position in the box.

We had to midfielders there who could do it all and chip in with goals to help too. Those 2 were just awesome

I'd pay to see - whatever this means, you pay to watch your team regardless - Rooney, Vidic, De Gea, RVP, Valencia, Nani, Scholes (still) and Kagawa (from what little I've seen of him).

Quite the opposite actually. In the last 2 years my opinion of Carrick has really changed. When he plays his usual position we are at our strongest IMO.

What I am really pissed off at, is that we have literally nobody else in the squad who can adequately offer cover for Carrick when he is out. Fergie hasn't addressed this so far in the transfer window and I don't think he will either.

I worry that if Carrick picks up an injury we will be in trouble.

Last I heard about it, granted it was over a day ago, was it was loan only i.e. no option to buy afterwards.

The squad is fine, it's the tactics that are lacking. That and the current injury crisis. Agree completely with this...whats annoying tho is that at half time it was clearly evident that changes needed to be made and where they needed to be made yet he still took his time in taking off nani,also why was Valencia right back when we had rafeal on the bench?

This is where we certainly differ - as I would and WILL pay to see every single player on that pitch! As long as they are wearing the United jersey and give it their all - I am happy and proud to go over and show them my support!

I'd agree with this partly.

An out and out Mekelele type player is actually very rare and has only really been used effectively a couple of times. Makelele could do what he did because he had Zidane, Raul, Figo, Ronaldo and so on ahead of him. it's a huge luxury to have a mdifelder that doesn't have to get forward at all, and one that very few teams can afford.

From an outsider perspective, United need a second Carrick, no more no less. I'm not sure Cleverly can do that, I think Anderson can but I have yet to really see it. Fletcher obviously can but it remains to be seen how and when he comes back, and I guess that could be at the back of Fergie's thinking - a fit Fletcher means that the midfield problems are no more.

I think Ando could easily cover for Carrick if needs be. Just tell him to sit in front of the back four and keep it simple at all times and play someone beside him like Cleverley beside him.

Having seen Kagawa handle the helter skelter of a tough away game at Everton so well I'm convinced that at some stage of the season Fergie will give him a game or two in a deeper role in midfield. He could do it with his eyes closed I think. Delicious first touch, really comfortable on the ball, lovely passing range, always looking around him even before the ball gets to him, able to dribble to get himself out of tight situations. A Scholes or Modric-esque rebirth as a deeper lying creator wouldn't surprise me at some stage of his Utd career. I think he's the best signing we've made since we got Evra ajd Vidic in for half nothing a few years back. Class act.

If Fletcher gets fit though, the problem will probably be solved.

Fingers crossed his last two outings aren't a false dawn.
