Anyone else surprised that United didn't move for Sahin at all? He can't get a game at Madrid but that's because Alonso and Khedira are in front of him.

Obviously, you can't second guess Fergie but he could have gotten Sahin plus a good DMF for the same price and wages as RVP.

Unless he pulls something out of te bag in the next week or so then the only conclusion you could possibly take from this summer is that Fergie is happy with our midfield options.

Probably doesnt fancy the loan deal in fairness, Wenger has always been more willing to do loans.

There is also the chance that he can't see anyone who would be a serious improvement on what we have.

That's not me saying that what is there is good enough, but if whats available is not much better than what we already have, its probably not worth the outlay. Box to box midfielders who can play in a 2 man midfield are rare, and even rarer when you consider the level of quality that everyone says we need. The likes of Schweinsteiger and Alonso aren't really readily available.

I'd say if presented with an attractive enough offer Real woul definitely sell.

All Summer there has been no concrete links between us and any holding midfielder types. Everything would seem to suggest that Fergie is happy with what he's got!

I think if Fergie had been planning on a serious bid for a CM he would have moved on Anderson or would not have offered Scholes and Giggs new deals. Whatever about the overall quality there's simply too many bodies in the squad capable of playing CM.
I'd say he has a few players in mind for next season if Anderson and Cleverly don't perform, Fletcher doesn't get back to fitness and if Scholes and Giggs retire.
There's potentially huge rebuilding work in CM but if he gives Anderson, Cleverly and Fletch a chance to prove themselves he makes his job much easier come next summer if they do.

Y. I just can't figure it out.

I'm pretty sure that the RVP move was opportunism from Fergie. He saw the chance to get a player he admired and took it.

I wouldn't necessarily think that his squad plan this summer was 'get RVP in'.

But i can't figure out how it all comes together.

Obviously, it's going to be very hard not to play all three of Rooney, RVP, Kagawa when they're all fit. But to do this Kagawa must move back a bit from his favourite position and additionally United's wingers are totally negated.

This last bit is the toughest for me to understand because for me, United have without a doubt the best wing options in the PL and good wingers have been such a part of Fergie's success at United. He always seems to have understood, and been able to find, the best route to goal against the 'park the bus' teams.

Unless the plan is to go...

it's orgasmically attacking, and though it would partly make me sick to my stomach, I'd be very interested in watching that front five in full flow.

But it leaves you with the problem that is the other CMF. Stop them, mark the wingers and you've a good enough chance of breaking the whole thing down.

I'm guessing that the plan for it is to have two brilliant options. United could resort to the Barca style of playing the ball around and working it through the middle or they could stick on two really effective wingers and play around teams.

The problem i keep coming back to is that both formations would be so much more effective with someone like Keane at DMF. Obviously Roy Keane's don't come along every season but that's not to say you don't even look for that type of a player.

Meh, loads of rambling here, apologies. Bene thinking of it a lot for ff reasons.

The squad is fine, it's the tactics that are lacking. That and the current injury crisis. You seem to be more than disillusioned, did you not say you might start supporting Everton instead in the match thread? Holding mf in the same or similar role to Carrick. Someone who plays that extremely disciplined role in front of the back 4. Someone who's job is to intercept balls, break down attacks and help initiate our counter plays. I would consider that role a type of holding midfielder role.

You could maybe argue that Carrick is but hes not exactly Makelele.

As for someone calling a Keane a defensive midfielder, near the end of his career he was a little but more defensive but mainly he was box to box. Check out any of the old games on Sky or Setanta at the moment to see him in his prime.

Hes always in around the opposing box making things happen between little one/twos and getting wide and putting in crosses, then chasing back cleaning up.

Check out the the FA Cup 4th round in 99 against Liverpool. In my opinion Keanes greatest game for United, not Juventus. Everythng came through him in that game.

We'll never see the likes of him again.

Why are some of you people so against conflicting views on Utd? Aren't Utd open to criticism? In my lifetime I've experienced so many fantastic Utd sides, people you'd pay money to see. The current team has very few (with the exceptions I've mentioned). Gone are the days of Ronaldo, Beckham, Keane, Eric, the list goes on. Would I get excited about going to watch Danny Welbeck? No.

Its hard to argue with the x does not excite me argument. An X is not good enough argument causes all sorts of post v counter posts.

for me Welbeck is an exciting player, i'm not saying anyone else is wrong on the matter I just have a differant opinion. Some of the goals he has got are really good. His two most recent goals were for England so the situation didn't excite but the goals were top quality. Chip v Belgium and the Back heel v Swedan were absolute class. Hoping for plenty of that play in a Gingham shirt this season.
