Okay, so After Hours doesn't usally do sports threads, barr the odd exception. But with only 11 days* to to one of the biggest sporting fortnights on the earth, and with what is preety much a Home Olympics for us, well its the closest it will ever come here. Prehaps its appropiate that the good folks of After Hours post all their thoughts, amusing observations, the scandel, and prehaps even the odd result here.

So here we go, you excited yet?

She hardly melted, she was under huge pressure. There are many variables in sailing, it's not like a runner doing well below his personal best. She was ranked below the 3 medalists, so in fact she overperformed. She did incredibly well, if we were told we would have our best finish in sailing in 30 years before the Olympic we'd have been delighted. Im sure she did her best to win, like all our athletes, and they don't need people like you talking them down.

I agree. I think our inward looking mentality and suspicion of other countries and ''foreign games'' and so forth has cost us in so far as producing top athletes. We should be winning a good bit more, and competing in more sports. But the lack of organisational and infrastructure, or the will for it, isnt there. The fact that a lot of our best athletes are from Northern Ireland is no co-incidence either.

The weather in NZ is no better or worse than it is here. Irish people don't like getting cold and wet. That's why we constantly complain about the weather.

So as long as the GAA take most of our athletes we're not going to be winning anything internationally I guess. Oh well, maybe I can get a UK passport if I stay here long enough!

I agree we need to be more ruthless and raise expectations, but talking down the athletes after the have performed well is hardly constructive. They'll be more hurt and determined then anyone.

Melted? Lol. She sailed very well in her stronger legs just couldn't build up a big enough lead to hold onto unfortunately.

44 points was an excellant score and would have comfortably won a medal 4 years ago.

****ing save it for another time. She doesn't need to read your crap and neither does anyone else. Talk about it again later on after the loss, not that you will. You only want to get a cheap shot in at her while the loss is fresh. Such a cnutish attitude to take. You'd swear she sank coming out the gate.

Of course it's disappointing no one said it isn't but the girl did incredibly well regardless, was she a real medal hope all along?? I don't think so. And then she started doing really well and everybody expected her to get a medal and when she didn't it's typical Irish begrudgery from some people - oh she's no use, came fourth not good enough blah blah. Us suddenly turning around and saying " that's not good enough" is not going to magically make the Irish athletes win more medals FFS.

i don't know i think it's better sometimes to criticise and highlight failings than to pat someone on the back and say "ah sure you did your best - unlucky"

Which is great, but if Annalise was given more than a few grand from a private sponsor and a Mr Tayto everyone would be complaining that an elitist sport was getting funded when there is a recession on.

The country lets it's sportsmen and women down, not the other way around.

Exactly right and that's the point I'm getting at. She of course deserves credit for her performance but the harsh reality is she didn't perform when it really mattered.

I'm sure she knows that as well so it's not like it's an unfounded attack.
