Just before you get to the car-park that's on the left-hand side of the road coming from Killarney. The black pillars at the entrance have got writing on, but you can't make it out on Google Streetview.

Its a really tiny townland consisting of about four fields comprising about 70 acres. The 1911 census shows just one family living in a gatehouse/lodge.

Carrigafreaghane ; rock of the whortleberries.

whortleberries are like blueberries or billberries. In East Kerry people used to go out on the bog collecting fraughans in the summertime.

The car park is called Carrigafreaghane Car Park by the Council and the NP&WS refer to the nearby entrance to the park as Carrigafreaghane Entrance.

I could have driven out today but I got all the above information on line.

Did a search cause I was wondering what the hell the National Monuments Depot was ; sounded like it might be potentially interesting - had visions of it being some place they kept all the old statues from all around the country.

The National bit is a misnomer anyway because there are National Monuments Depots all over the country - six in total. From the description below it sounds like the place that take care od admin work/store tools etc.

The major area of work of National Monuments involves the preservation, protection, maintenance, conservation, management and presentation of National Monuments in State care. It staffed by administrators, professionals, technicians, crafts/trade persons and general operatives.

There are almost 750 monuments, or groups of monuments, in this category. National monuments in State care range from the Neolithic period, such as Newgrange, which is over 5,000 years old, to Pearse's cottage in Ros Muc, Co. Galway, which was built in the 20th century. In between, there are examples of monuments from every period and of different classifications:

early Christian/medieval monuments such as the Rock of Cashel, Skellig Michael, Clonmacnoise and Glendalough;
medieval castles, abbeys and tower houses such as Cahir Castle, Trim Castle, Mellifont Abbey, Jerpoint Abbey, Aughanure castle;
late medieval monuments such as Charlesfort at Kinsale, Co. Cork; and
from the 18th and 19th century, the Casino at Marino, the Swiss Cottage and Kilmainham Goal.
Work on National Monuments is operated on a site/project specific or geographical basis. The country is divided into six regions. The bulk of the conservation and restoration work undertaken at national monuments in State care is carried out by a direct labour force operating from the six regional depots at Athenry, Dromahair, Trim, Kilkenny, Mallow and Killarney. Each region has a depot, which is managed by a works manager who reports to the senior architect for the region. The works manager is in charge of a team of industrial staff (craft/trade workers and general operatives).

I was hoping to get her a Dr.Crokes jersey for her birthday.
I'm just wondering do ye know what shop/shops sells Dr.Crokes jerseys in Killarney so it wouldn't be a wasted trip down for no jersey or some type of Dr.Crokes gear to come back with?

Dr Crokes have their own shop up in the clubhouse which is open on Saturday mornings when the underage training is on

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't be sure that I would be able to get to the shop on just a Saturday. In case I don't is there shops in the town that sell their gear too or is it just the clubhouse shop.

Another option would be to contact any of the Commitee members (details on their website) and arrange a sale/collection with one of them for a time/date of choice. They might be able to accommodate you that way

was in the aghadoe heights hotel this week for a few hours in the spa, had the experience of my life, i have been to quiet a few spas around the country , also may i add in hotels of high standard, there was none of them could compare with the spa itself its facilities, the staff, best of the lot, my time at aghadoe was bliss, i will be back, it is heaven, there overlooking the lakes of killarney,

I'm assuming there is no point in starting until September but if anyone has any ideas of venues, dates that suit people, can ye please let me know. I know some people wouldn't even consider this type of course but I think we should all try something different & everyone that does the course, will get a lot out of it.

They are a few venues in Killarney that may be available..The KDYS in fairhill comes to mind, also night classses usually begin in late Sept in the Community College, If you gave them a buzz they might include your program in this years events..No harm in trying anyway..Think it may be run by the VEC..classes from computer studies and Zumba were held there last year..Good Luck anyway...

Has anyone ever heard of 'Apple Lake' in or near Killarney?

When taking a break out cycling recently I got chatting to these guys who when translated a piece from a book they had, from Hebrew to English => it translated to 'Apple Lake' . I've never heard of it, and cannot find a linkie to it online.

If anyone has, you might let me know,

One GAA Family United in Respect

Long after the thousands had left Fitzgerald Stadium last Saturday evening our Tyrone team was getting ready for a bitter journey home. Around 500 Kerry people remained outside the changing area – men and women, old and young. As our people started to board their coach a ripple of applause met them. That ripple grew and grew and for long minute after long minute j...ust went on and on and on.

When Mickey Harte appeared, a cheer of support went up. As the coach headed down through Killarney hundreds on the pavements took over where the others left off, warmly applauding Tyrone. There is no doubt that Ireland lost a lot and took a lot of wrong turns in the last few years. But if you wanted your faith in decency, respect, honour and dignity restored, then Killarney at about eight o’clock last Saturday evening was the place to be.

Inspirational. Unforgettable. Classy.See more
