Nuclear fallout? / Media blackout?

Have been keeping an eye on this fukushima situation on and off. Have to use the net really, since the media have turned off the story. Probably because of political pressure, because it looks like its really bad.

So anyway, this fukushima reactor, or reactors, have melted down and are spewing plutonium(i think) in a big plume. This plume has made the area uninhabitable, and will eventually make the entire island(s) of japan a no go area. Perhaps japan will have to be evacuated? Who knows. They, the japanese gov and the company involved, dont have control of the situation and appear to be lying about the extent of the catastrophy.

Chernobel was contained in 10 days, fukushima is still going 3 months on. The plume of radiation, because of the amount of reactors that have melted down, is many fold worse than chernobel. This plume has been making its way to the USA and will hit all of the northern hemisphere. When it rains, down it will come.

Some are saying that its already hit the US and Canada and that they have stopped monitering radiation to avoid public panic.

I heard about all this awhile back, wasnt to worried tbh, but then watched this video recently, and I nearly sh1t my pants, which is somthing I dont do lightly :rolleyes:.

Its a conference from March 18th with some anti nuclear people. The person speaking talks a little about chernobel aswell as fukushima. Theres also a whole load of other videos and info knocking about with regard to how bad it is. But this one seems to have somone who knows what their talking about so I link it.

Could it really be as bad as she says? Are the governments of the world covering up the scale of it? Is a sizable chunk of the worlds population going to come down with cancer in the future? Is japan going to be abandoned? Whats your opinions people, is it a doomsday scenario or somthing less?

In recent times, more information about the spent fuel situation at the Fukushima-Dai-Ichi site has become known. It is my understanding that of the 1,532 spent fuel assemblies in reactor No. 304 assemblies are fresh and unirradiated. This then leaves 1,231 irradiated spent fuel rods in pool No. 4, which contain roughly 37 million curies (~1.4E+18 Becquerel) of long-lived radioactivity. The No. 4 pool is about 100 feet above ground, is structurally damaged and is exposed to the open elements. If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident.
The infrastructure to safely remove this material was destroyed as it was at the other three reactors. Spent reactor fuel cannot be simply lifted into the air by a crane as if it were routine cargo. In order to prevent severe radiation exposures, fires and possible explosions, it must be transferred at all times in water and heavily shielded structures into dry casks.. As this has never been done before, the removal of the spent fuel from the pools at the damaged Fukushima-Dai-Ichi reactors will require a major and time-consuming re-construction effort and will be charting in unknown waters. Despite the enormous destruction cased at the Da–Ichi site, dry casks holding a smaller amount of spent fuel appear to be unscathed.

It is no exaggeration to say that the fate of Japan and the whole world depends on NO.4 reactor. This is confirmed by most reliable experts like Dr. Arnie Gundersen or Dr. Fumiaki Koide.

A 5.6 mag just off Fukishima at 3:50pm today (Irish time). A little stronger and worse case scenario could have played out. This is far from over, I'd go as far and speculate "we ain't seen nothing yet".

5.6 wouldn't be considered too big on the scale but going by reports on the state of NO 4 it would not want to go too much higher than that.

Yea true, but here's a video of a 5.2, off the coast of Fukishima theres a flurry of earthquakes some a little over some a little under, like a sledge hammer will take a few smacks to to take a half decent wall down, where a JCB will domolish it one go.

If reactor 4 is in the state some claim all these 4-6 mags close by have to be weakening it little by little until the straw that broke the camels back arrives.

I just really hope it doesn't end up as an end of the world scenario. The Japanese government and TEPCO have proven themselves beyond incompetent and the reigns of this operation should be taken over by an international organisation set up specifically to handle this immediately.

In fairness there's a billion different ways that humanity can be wiped out. There's little reason to worry about one more when there's nothing you can do about it. If this doesn't kill us, it'll be a supervolcano exploding, or a meteorite hitting us, or nanobots gone wild, or a virus out of control, or one of the many imminent wars getting out of hand, or global warming finishing us off, or the LHC creating a stable blackhole that can't be contained, or a robot uprising etc.

And if you survive all that, you're still going to die anyway. So don't worry about it.

Well yeah but still, this one is imminent plus the very worst part is that it's the direct outcome of government/corporate stupidity. They've lost the right to handle this situation, the operation should be taken over by an international body that can and will do what's necessary irrespective of petty human vested interests which are irrelevant and obsolete in such cases, the human race>diplomacy. The second great depression is a storm in a teacup compared to what nature is going to unleash. It's farcical how seriously people believe in maintaining a failed status quo and an illusionary crisis based in their minds when an actual, real crisis is waiting to happen.

Supervolcanos/meteorites? Well that's nature, nothing much we can do about it.
Nanobots/LHC/robot uprising? All in the name of science, we were trying to further our knowledge so it's noble and therefore ok.
War/weaponised plague? Both equivalent to Fukushima, therefore really bad.
Ordinary Plague? Nature is a bitch then.

Jhonny7, are you saying that the nuclear material that used to be in the reactor building and cooling pool but is now all over the ground and in the waters offshore are safe? Sure, why did they bother with all the expensive shielding then? The nuclear industry could have saved billions by not having to make expensive shielding!
And lets not forget that DU is waste material left over from the manufacture of nuclear fuel. The fuel part of uranium is less than one percent so there is a lot of DU stored. You tell me some uses for DU and tell me if we are still wrong to criticise the nuclear industry.

I was wondering where this thread had gone, I think it will become active again after yesterday's 7.3 off the coast of Fukushima and prediction by a Mr. Nagai from Japanese Meteorological agency who warned that a bigger earthquake of M8.0 is expected.

All the news of yesterdays quake mainly says everything is ok, no major tsunami, no deaths, Fukuishima plant ok, etc........although they had to release some air because there was a build up of pressure in reactor 1 building, never said how much "air" they released or which way it blew, but everything ok at Fukushima!

TEPCO seems to have lost track of the corium from 3 nuclear plants. And then there are the two earthquakes of 6.2 and 7.3 which hit just offshore since midnight...
