He has stabbed the victim with a six inch stilettoe and secreted it up his cadburys canal using the contents of the thermos

A detective's unpacking his stuff in his new apartment, and hasn't met any of his neighbours yet.

From an apartment downstairs, he hears a woman scream "JOHN NO!" followed by a gunshot.

He runs down and in an apartment he finds a woman dead on the floor with a gun beside her.
Also in the room is a doctor, a lawyer and a builder. He doesn't know any of them and none of them are wearing I.D badges, yet he immediately arrests the lawyer.
Why?

I think the backstory was that someone had gone missing. It's Japanese in origin, so the broken English makes it seems a little eery too.
