only asking as we were away for a few days and were driving back through Kilsheelan on way back from Clonmel..I wasn't paying much attention but there was a Garda checkpoint ahead ( husband was driving, kids in the back) and we stopped at it..we were waved straight on but as we were going through there was a member of the Armed Response Unit with a big gun looking at all the cars and they were stopping nearly all the vans for a lot longer than the cars..husband thinks they were trying to catch someone either on way to or from Waterford/Clonmel

anyone hear anything? i'm so nosey:o

The Gardai at the Tower Hotel 2 nights ago was for Phil Hogans Labour Party conference, and there were household charge protestors down there. The Labour Party conference was in Galway, not Waterford. The Minister was in the Tower to address a meeting of Local Authority members. Did get jeered alright tho by those opposed to the household tax.

Its strange that people are protesting against the current government and never bothered protesting against the previous government, which were far worse and put us into this mess. Even with the conferences recently - FG & Lab got a lot of abusive supporters and hardly anybody turned up to the Fianna Fail one. Bizarre.

And the current government was voted in with the hope that a change would be good. Instead its the exact same with more broken promises already then can be counted. FG and lab get a lot of abuse because its deserved.

(Because FG/Labour won't hold to account the religious orders)

* They break even their own wage rules with awarded massive hikes.

* They refuse to hold to account those that have been deemed bad in the Mahon report
(...And as such by in-action, what a waste of money that was!)

* Cancelled six other investigations!
(Possibly because some of their own involved yet again?)

* They have TOTALLY reversed positions on many, many areas and particular topics.

* They have invented many a new tax, charge, payment, levy or whatever name they can think up by the month.

* They are price fixing the cost of drink!
(As in their own FG manifesto, by side-effect, in aiding bars to see rake more profits alone - but never mentioning ANYTHING about teens - but thats the excuse now!)

* They have jumped like good little lapdogs at every order from French/German masters.
(Even more than once, giving them budget details before even the Irish people get them!)

* Reversed position on Third level fees!

* Still paying out to the Bondholders.

* Sourcing data from household bills, possibly breaking European privacy laws!

* Making paycuts to some public servants while uping their own expenses and inventing more for themselves.

* Changed the Dail clocking in system so they can exploit it in a number of ways - even if they are not actually there!

* Refusing so far to hold Mr Ahern to further account!

* Changed their position on corporate donations!

* Changed their position on the number of TD's needed!

* Stalled on the 16 years report about changes much needed to fathers rights!

* Refusing to change rule 68 of the national schools (religion related) and rule 69, which is purely sexist!

* Stalling (hoping we will forget?) over the matter of the Seanad - still instead using it to reward their own!

* Made a total fcuk-up of the household charge!

* Made a total fcuk-up of the turf-cutting issue!

* Dropped the climate change bill in November 2011

* Slaughtered Garda resources and numbers!

* Reversed the addressing of the (too) many quango's. Using them instead to place their own people on them!

* FG and Lab Manifestos: stated there would be vetting of appointments to state boards by the Oireachtas.
Now? Example: Party political appointments have been made, without any oversight or transparency. In October 2011, they appointed the former head of AIB Investment Management as head of the New Era quango, without revealing her pay or conditions.

* Addressing further the Freedom of Information act? Become non-existent. Vanished!
Instead rushed through and totally fcuked up laws pertaining to the internet, right of use giving cut-off powers to a semi-state body that is also possibly breaking European law!

Yes, but it was Fianna Fail who forced the government into this and the country as a whole. They are the cause of many of the hardships that are faced by the people and the reason why Fine Gael are implementing such hardships. They never faced as much anger in the past and they should have been hit just as hard right now as a reminder that the people haven't forgotten.

FF got the country into the mess that exists for future generations. FG/Labour didn't have the courage or integrity to stand up on behalf of those people it now represents and make those who gambled and lost pay. Instead, our government have taken the coward's way out and hit the people of Ireland. I actually resent the FG/Labour cowards more than the FF scumbags.

Early days yet. The amount they owe is €200 million and the state are currently and actively pushing to get this.

Everyone who was asked, has responded pretty much instantly. Only one Government TD withheld an answer until the weekend due to his position in the government as Justice Minister and issues over the Independent Media group. He has confirmed he did not meet with him.

Not sure we will ever stamp this out, but its something I would agree needs to be addressed.

Not as widespread as previous administrations and done in certain cases. Probably was a "take it or leave it" with those, who the government felt were best suited for the job, were going to "leave it". I don't mind it much but there is a lot of confusion and anger over this that needs to be addressed.

Where did they refuse? Where has someone not been held accountable by the government? Also, the waste of money has nothing to do with the current administration.

News to me! Household Charge & Water charge has been on the cards well before this government came in and is common across Europe. Saying that, the house hold charge was poorly thought out and rushed.

No price fixing has been introduced but this is in reference to a report suggesting that amongst numerous other measures. Its targeting the off licences which are providing very cheap drink to people. We have an issue with drink, we all know it, and the government are looking at ways to cut down on alcohol abuse.

With respect, they are bailing us out. We do have to follow the proposals and requirements set down by the EU/IMF. An agreement that was introduced by a previous administration, Fianna Fail. Negotiations on the agreement have taken place since taking office which has seen significant advantages to Ireland and are still be addressed.

Labour has, but a lot of people knew at the time Labour were just doing an election gimmick. It was widely discussed as just a gimmick. There was no way students were never going to be hit and even the USI are coming around to agreeing on this position despite heavily protesting against it.

Sadly so, and there are many arguments for and against including paying them out to get a better deal on the Anglo promissory notes (which has partly been completed)

This has not been brought in and appears to be shelved.

They have had paycuts, not enough many would agree, and are subject to the same level of taxation on their wages as everyone else. Some argue that because its not a job for life, and you can be booted out in four years or less, this is why your paid higher. Plus, as you know in both the private and public sector many are paid very high wages for their jobs and get to avail of expenses. Generally in bigger firms.

As for the expenses - even Sinn Fein exploit this. Remember the ink gate scandal? A lot of money spent on ink and no record of other expenses related to it including paper usage. There is no new expenses brought in by the current administration but I do agree that the system is open to abuse and should be restricted in areas but not abolished.

Was never aware of this. Many TDs, including opposition TDs, are regularly reported not to have fobbed into the Dail but are proven to be present anyway (they just didn't fob in. Example; Luke 'Ming' Flannagan. Independent)

Thats not something the government have any power to do and is subject to an investigation by the DPP, as the government have sent the report to them for investigation.

There has yet to be a referendum on this and other maters, and nothing has been confirmed. But, based on the census figures indicating a rise in population there may be some changes to the proposal. Indeed, the government has already indicated there will be big changes but there is a constitutional restriction a minimum of one TD for every 30,000 of population meant that 13 was the maximum reduction.

Again, early days. One such change being implement is ensuring that the fathers name is listed on the birth certificate. The rights of grandparents is also actively being looked at.

Source? 50% of all catholic schools, its expected, will be transferred out of Roman Catholic patronage. There has been nothing said, that I recall or can find, about rule 68 not being scraped. The latest is that it has been recommended to be scrapped - a report released only a few days ago.

Who said it was going to be done instantly? It will be done in the term of the government so its not a broken promise. We have more important referendums and any agreement to abolish it cant be instant anyway. There are far more pressing issues to deal with, the European Stability Treaty and the one on children’s rights.

Again, my bad, just knew it was something to do with Labour and that tw@ leading them. All i know is that the Ministers cronies were way more aggressive and insulting than the protestors.

I suppose things are getting so bad now that people are beginning to get balls and protest. We were always known to take it and do nothing, and no real point in protesting those who don't have the power at the moment. Times are a changing!

FG and Labour are just as responsible as FF for causing our economic mess. Granted, FF must take the greater share of blame but FG and Labour are not and should not be let off the hook.
