#1 - This notice is in relation to a proposed realignment of approximately 3.3km of the N60 at Oran (between Roscommon Town and Ballymoe).

Thursday 22nd March 2012 - 1 Notice:

1) Tender: Cavan to Dundalk Strategic Route Improvement Scheme – Topographical Survey Contract (Cavan CC).

#1 - Last year, l drove a section of the R178 from near the village of Louth towards Carrickmacross and discovered, to my complete surprise, a newly built section of Single Type 1 - yes, it had hard shoulders and all. The section in question must have been around 2km in length. From Dundalk, the R178 continues via Carrickmacross towards Shercock before dipping down towards Bailieborough. Backtracking to Shercock, the R162/R192 leads from there towards Cootehill and from there, the R188 leads on to Cavan Town. I wonder is this the route the local authorities (Louth/Monaghan/Cavan CCs) have in mind.

Can't recall off the top of my head, but some of the town names you gave there sound familiar alright. I'd say it's the Cavan-Dundalk road. It should eventually be assigned an N number when the R-roads that it consists of have all been upgraded.

Friday 23rd March 2012 - 2 Notices:

1) Tender: M7 Naas to Newridge By- Pass Upgrade Scheme Ground Investigation and Pavement Surveys (Laois CC);

2) Tender: Road Signs – Tender for the supply and delivery of Road Signs to Mayo County Council (Mayo CC).

#1 - Another development that lends weight towards the prospects of the M7 Nass to Newbridge (D3) upgrade going ahead - given that this notice involves ground investigation, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the upgrade goes ahead in 2013 or 2014 - remember that not so long ago, there was no money to upgrade the M1 to Lissenhall - well someone better tell the lads working there!

The Harry Reynold's Road is what was originally the inner relief road in Balbriggan - a new ring road is currently being built on a piecemeal basis - the R132 Dublin Road and R122 Naul Road are now connected by this road. The section of Naul Road that is due to be upgraded runs from its junction with the Harry Reynold's Road (a small section of which is to be upgraded as well) towards a recently extended upgraded section (outside the new Millfield Shopping Centre) which connects with the said ring road. From there, a sub-standard section of the Naul Road connects with the M1 at Junction 6. The Naul itself is about 4.5km West of Junction 6.

Thanks for that, it's this section. It's listed as 400 metres, so it won't go all the way from H.R. road to the end of the upgraded section (750 m), which seems odd. I presume they'll eventually fill the gap, and widen the rest as far as the M1. You can see how the road suddenly narrows.

I don't think the gap is quite 750m - Google Maps does not yet show a short section that extended the upgraded carriageway towards Balbriggan (done in 2011) - this was done in connection with the Millfield Shopping Centre (also not yet shown). My estimate would put the gap at approximately 450 to 500m - perhaps the junction upgrade (seems to be advertized as a separate lot from the linear upgrades) will be in addition to the 400m which might be enough to close the gap - we'll just have to wait and see what happens - shouldn't be too long.
