Is everything about sex?

Is everything we do just about having sex?

Are we here on the planet solely to reproduce as much and as often as we can?

I had a conversation with some friends where we argued about if there is anything that you do that is not ultimately because it will benefit you in gaining a sexual partner.
Is there anything in this world that we do that is not ultimately about having sex?
I myself argued that we all do things just for fun and that the enjoyment of doing the activity is the reword that we are seeking. My friend argued that most activities are a way of gaining something that will ultimately benefit us in acquiring a sexual partner.

What say you After Hours is it all about horizontal shenanigans or is there more to this grate big world of ours then interlocking genitals?

It is not all about the sex but you have hit the nail on the head. It is all about the genes and the proliferation of your genes in preference to others. in terms of mankind as a whole, yes, thats what its about...well, reproduction and evolution . Survival of the species.

Doesn't really matter though, because the Race is expanding so quickly, it wont be able to support itself much longer and a horrible disease is coming which will wipe most of us out .

Ah, it makes sense now - I was wondering what you were getting so het up for.
Fine - I'm not a "gamer" and have never even owned a games console, but given that it's an internet forum (which was initially set up for Quake players) it's not unreasonable to assume that there is a reasonably high percentage of posters who might be into their gaming.

Logical Fallacy

It's not about sex because sex is not essential to individual survival. It may be linked to individual happiness but it's not something you need daily in order to live.

Your mates argument is flawed as he is placing a species wide requirement for sex as a motivating factor for an individual.

Go a month without sex and you won't die. Go a month without water and you will. As such, the need for water trumps the need for sex on an individual level. Your mates argument is flawed and I have a strong suspicion that he/she is an idiot.

Sex is a big part of life but it's not the only thing. It's one of the basic instincts like sleep and hunger which people are just hyping up to be the be all and end all. Give me steak and a snooze over the bumping uglies any day!

If the question is whether we subconsciously plan all of our actions as a means of maximising the likelihood of having sex, I would guess not but I'm not a biologist. I doubt the subconscious is all that capable of planning anything like that, and it really is just that the action stimulates the person in some way.

It may happen that some of the things that stimulate us are those that increase one's survivability and prospects as a mate, hence genes that somehow motivate people to do certain things or take to certain interests get passed on. But that wouldn't imply that the genes are wiring you with the express purpose of getting laid. How it increases your prospects would be a function of the environment and other genes present, and under certain conditions it might have a negative effect.

It also seems plausible to me that we could pick up certain genes that manifest as motivations or inclinations to act a way that has never really benefited us in terms of survivability or finding a mate. Something that might just not be detrimental enough to have been removed from the population, and that could motivate people to take to certain hobbies or behaviours. Such things wouldn't really be characterised by the goal of having sex.

So I would guess no, not everything is about sex based on a naive understanding of evolution and biology.

I don`t agree this is what was putting me off having a child. I would have happily adopted but the process is too long and costly. I`d admit my motives for having a child are selfish - I love children and they recharge my batteries. So much bad stuff going on and negative things, I needed the positives.
