There is MAJOR money to be made by selling the naming rights. And if it's "Always gonna be Landsdowne to me" then where's the big deal? Keep calling it Landsdowne (as I do and a lot of other people do) and let the big companies pay their money.

It's like when your local pub gets renamed. Everyone continues to call it whetever it was before!

IIRC it very nearly became Toyota Park, or Toyota Park Thomond or something.

Going to the O2 does not make me want to change phone companies, going to the Aviva does not make me feel inclined to get health insurance from them.

I already use Bord Gais for gas as I'm sure many others do, so it changes nothing.

It's great to have decent venues in this country. They cost a fair bit. If some company wants to sponsor it for their name above the door then great.

OP's nostalgia for e.g. calling a stadium on Landsdown Road - Landsdon Road is misplaced.

Anyway, only the media are obliged to call it Aviva Stadium (or they don;t get invited to press things there). Everyone else can call it whatever the hell they want.

To be honest, it just read like a cliche with no particular meaning but reinforcing a general feeling that we're all ****ed.

It won't be Landsdowne, The Point & the Grand Canal to me. It'll be the Aviva, the O2 and the Bord Gais Theatre. Because those are their names.

So hold on, it's ok to go to a footbal/rugbyl game and have ads on your tickets, then massive ads outside the stadium, massive ads inside the stadium, hoardings around the pitch with ads on them, ads on the big screen (should there be one), ads on the shirts the guys are wearing (in some cases more than one), massive ads ON the pitch......... but sponsoring the actual stadium itself.........

I agree - we (and our tourists coming here) are ripped off. Especially in the area of food and drink.

I agree - we (and our tourists coming here) are ripped off. Especially in the area of food and drink.

Inward investment is a good thing, however, being a giant billboard for a multinational company isn't in my opinion. Especially when it is our national arena, or national soccer or rugby ground.

Newcastle United's ground -St. James' Park'- is now called the Sports Direct Arena. Manchester City's is now the Etihad Stadium. Renaming venues isn't an Irish phenomenon, although I hate Landsdowne being called ''the Aviva''.
