So I got attacked tonight...

Totally out of nowhere. I was walking through the underpass of the train station near where I live and a guy came out of nowhere. Now I'm well used to being approached in the street by junkies looking for money etc, but I could see in this guy's eyes that he meant business. He might even have been armed, but to my surprise, I didn't wait to find out. I have never been in a fight in my life but as this guy charged into me. something took over and I swung for him first. I managed to floor him with two punches (thanks to some Karate lessons I had years ago) and then I ran for it.

But I'm home now, rattled, safe but pumped with adrenaline, starting to shake and feeling guilty! Is this normal? Has anybody else been through this?

I never said I'd be so rational in the situation you were in. You're imagining that or confusing me for someone else.

Second: you haven't offended my sensibilities. I simply stated that your thread title is misleading. You said you were attacked, but you were probably almost attacked. The guy was probably trying to attack you but you stopped him.

So changing it to "I was almost attacked last night..." would be more accurate.

Also, while I'm here, you say in your OP that you were attacked tonight. Do you mean last night? (maybe you're in a different time zone, now that I think of it)

No need to get angry. I said I believed your story and never said I would've done anything differently.

The OP was threatened, approached in a menacing manner and responded to the situation appropriately... probably. They were not attacked though.

Missed my earlier post did you ? I did exactly that. Didn't get attacked. Guy was just out to intimidate. Granted though my story was in broad daylight on a busy street and not in an underpass at night. And if I handn't been sick I would have reacted differently - I wouldn't have hit the guy but I would have take a more aggressive posture and perhaps pushed him back. But as it happened deliberately submissive body language at first, followed by a good eye stare did the trick and avoided a conflict.

I seem to be hearing more and more stories lately of people being attacked for no apparent reason, I honestly donk know if it's happening more often or if I'm just hearing more stories.

So when does it become an attack, when the punch gets thrown? When it lands? To add on to the dictionary definitions, mine has:

Take aggressive action against a person
Act against someone aggressively in an attempt to injure or kill

If someone is rushing you aggressively in a secluded area, I'd say you're getting attacked.

I think the most important thing to note here is that the attack takes place 'tonight' and is therefore a message from the future. Perhaps it's a warning, and that we have the ability to stop this event from ever taking place?

Because in this case I'm stranded in a foreign country and I had a bad experience, and I thought that even if I didn't necessarily get sympathy, I would have a conversation with people who have been through the same thing. Every time I read a story about someone getting attacked, I get an adrenaline rush and I get angry; I try to imagine myself in that situation and how I'd cope. It's a scary thought really, I hope it never happens to me. I usually have to walk through Dublin City at night on my own (I'm sure like a lot of people here) to get the bus home and I'm always aware that there is a change I could get attacked. I've been thinking about doing some sort of self-defense classes, it'd be well worth anyone's while in my opinion.

I'm a pacifist and I would never attack someone for anything, but if I were attacked or about to be attacked I certainly wouldn't hesitate in defending myself.

What country you are in is irrelevant, you are chatting to strangers on the internet, one of them could be the person who you attacked/attacked you.
I'm not attacking you, I'm just not agreeing with everything you said. you will get some fun but without some controversy it would be boring.

If you were about to be attack (or you thought you were about to be attacked), would you let the other person attack you first and then a couple of injuries/stab wounds later decide that it's perhaps the right time to defend yourself?

Reminds me of an incident I had before Christmas. Was about 12.30 on Friday night and I had the dog in the park. I usually run a bit as a bit of exercise for him. He went near the bushes and I kept along the path. Had my hood up as it was cold and wasn't really paying attention in front of me as I was looking to see where the dog was and if it was following me. Looked ahead to be greeted by someone trying to clothesline me. I stopped about to expect a fight from some drunk muppet. Turned out the fella was just on his way home from work and didn't see the dog and thought I was about to jump on him.

I dunno, I'd say if someone is rushing you that you're getting attacked. & I'd definitely say that you'd getting attacked if someone has swung for you.
