How to sneak people into TCD after hours?

Hey,

I live in the GMB on campus and though I'm a postgrad it's my first year in Trinity so I'm not sure how strict the security dudes are on letting people in. Next week two of my friends are coming to Dublin to see me and I don't wanna make them stay in a hostel. I know I can sign one in but is there any way I can get both into my room? We plan on having a night out like so defo won't be back til after 12. I reckon I could prob get someone in my house or a friend on campus to sign the second one into their room but they obv won't be present with us when we return...how strict are security on enforcing the rule that the person who signs them in must be present also?? Could I get away with just being like, XX signed them in but she left early??

It used to be the case, and probably still is that you can apply in writing (email will do) to the junior dean for special dispensation to host two over-night guests. You'll need to give them either a week or five days notice... you collect the letter and must present it on returning with your guests.

Be sure to add their full names, as well as dates they'll be staying to the email.

I just checked the tcd website there and the Junior Dean's page and it doesn't say anything about this loophole...it states categorically that one overnight guest may stay occasionally. How long ago do you know was this allowed??

Two years ago. Junior deans' office are reasonable people, and security will abide by a letter from that office. Call them or email them and inquire... it won't cost anything, there's no risk, and I reckon they'll most likely say yes, especially since you're a postgrad.

I lived on campus for 5 years, and while I did sneak people in the odd time granted (I had a key for another entrance), I've seen countless people people caught in front arch and sent on their way... to wander the streets for the night. Yes there's a fair chance you'll get past them, except that you're taking the risk of one of your mates being out on his ear

Front arch security know the tricks and take pleasure (wouldn't you?) in trying to catch you out. If you're not recognised they're well known to scrutinise your ID etc.

btw they come down harsh if they catch you. I was once heading home to campus after a night out with a friend of mine who had left his bike on campus and came with me to pick it up. He'd lived in the GMB the year before and still had his room key-card, so flashed it and was let in. I walked him to his bike chatting, just as I was leaving for home security approached us, took our names and escorted my friend off campus. Next day I received a phonecall and a fairly immediate appointment with a JD assistant... and was fined €50.

EDIT: Just FYI, Junior Dean assistants have been known to lurk on these boards.

Ya in fairness I don't think I'd risk it...seems like loads of hassle without the guarantee of actually getting away with it, and possibly one of my friends being homeless for the night! Not cool. Just it's kinda odd, I spose, having come from a college that was pretty lax about these things, and being used to living in a house where there are pretty much no guest restrictions! I'll ask the dean and hopefully he'll allow it. Would major suck if he didn't. My friends are fellow students and after paying for the train up and one of them for a flight over from the UK, they can't really afford a hostel!

How on earth did security know your friend didn't live on campus!?! And why were you fined?? Seems a bit harsh...

It was a bit of a running joke here for a while here when (same friend with the bike) was called up for having an open can in the hamilton (Summer Pav/cricketpitch-fridays... nearest jacks without a massive queue). He posted about his appointment with one of the "JD minions", and when he went up said minion had his posts all printed out and was quite pissed off at being labelled a minion... though I do believe there's nothing too pejorative about the term.

My attempts to argue my way out of it with logic, i.e. that I actually didn't do anything, were met with timidly obstinate ears, I was abetting and that was that. The alcohol part kind of annoyed me though, we'd really not had a whole lot to drink. I don't tar them all with the same brush though, it was the particular minion I was dealing with (don't believe he's a minion anymore) who happened to be a little on the intransigent side, most of the others are normal reasonable humans.

They knew my mate didn't live on campus cos they recognised him from the year before... and hadn't seen him in 6 months. I'm guessing after we came in (and they read our id cards) they looked his name up, and then drove up to us. CCTV in trinity would outmatch central london btw.

As for office drinking...how did you get caught? You must have been making a lot of noise. I'd quite often before a night out have a few cans in the office with friends before heading out. No hassle from security in my 8 years being here!

I'm ashamed to say we were. Speakers on full blast seemed like a great idea at the time...

Before a night out is fine, done it myself, with windows open and security walking by. They don't mind. After a night out however...

The advice to make a formal request to the JD's office is the best solution.

As a postgrad a little more latitude is granted, be sure to say in the letter that you have cleared this with those which share your kitchen so they know there will be two randomers around.

People who act with care and respect get looked after and treated with respect by the JD's office. These kind of things are routine and a letter appears quickly. Clearly if your name is already on the JD's radar you ain't going to get any leeway granted.

Idiots who cause hassle and disruption will have an early morning meeting with the JD.

Highly doubt it since it would be hard to justify under data protection rules.

Surely Data protection would have provisions to deal with video footage etc, which can capture deaf peoples conversations... Besides, judging on the rights we have as tenants, I wouldn't be surprised if by stepping onto College grounds we have absolutely no rights as human beings...

The single best way I have ever seen this done is as follows, however, it only works with other Trinity students:

The actual tenant reports to security that they've lost their key card (this is no big deal, they just make one up for you straight away) and give the 'lost' card to your not signed in guest.

Have an actual tenant at the front of your group approaching front gate.

The person who is neither tenant nor guest walks behind, behaving like they don't know the other two. Make sure you do this from a sufficient distance from the gate so the cameras don't pick ye up.

The actual tenant knocks on the door, acts a bit drunk (or is actually drunk) and flashes their key card at security (key card only mind!) and says "resident and guest" or "tenant and guest", your preference.

At this point the unsigned is waiting behind them

Security then asks to see a student card at which point the tenant fumbles drunkenly trying to find their student card.

This goes on for a suitably long moment before the unsigned impatiently flashes student card and key card and sort of rolls their eyes at security who lets them pass because "Oh, look at the silly person without their student card, delaying everyone".

At this point you've probably realised another student card is needed. So basically this only works really well with other Trinity students, buuuuuut you could ask to borrow someone else's and trust that security won't check their student card and will just accept it when it's flashed at them. That said, if you get caught, the person who lent them the student card is in trouble too.

All that said, just e-mail the JD, it's considerably easier. Security cannot be nagged, bribed, persuaded or reasoned with. Try to e-mail an assistant though as the current JD is ****e and takes forever to reply to e-mails. Never thought I'd miss Emma Stokes...

Back in the day, when Lincoln gate was being restored, you used to be able to just about squeeze between the gate and the wall. Was a good way of ensuring you didn't bring back a fat bird.

Easiest way in now is to jump over Lincoln gate. It's got plenty of suitable footholes in the ironwork.

The maths entrance onto Westland Row is gone long ago.

Getting a Pearse Street staff key (entrance opposite Garda station) is a good way in too - though watch out for the cameras...

Unfortunately for today's undergraduates, the proliferation of CCTV in the college has severely hampered efforts.

If I were to chance it in 2012, I'd probably jump over the railings at Nassau Street near the draw bridge. No security around there.

When living in Goldsmith you swiped in and security only stopped you if there was more then one person walking in at a time generally. My window was out onto Pearse st. so I'd just go up, put my key card in a box of matches and fling it out the window to my friend waiting below. Worked a charm.

Security in Goldsmith seemed to be even more unpleasant then those at front arch.
