Illegal Downloading Your thing??

My question is this do you download allot of music, movies or other software quite frequently illegally or would you tend to try and download more often legally. Give reasons as well. The two main reasons I often here for both sides are:

Illegal Downloading: The music and film industry are two big and to powerful, downloading a few songs wont affect their profits, plus those industries need to change.

Legal: I try and support my favorite artists so I download legally, plus those industries especially the music industry are facing a massive decline in sales resulting in music labels not backing new artists anymore and sticking with current well established artists.

And what do you think needs to change for you to stop downloading illegally or for other to stop downloading illegally.

First started filesharing around 1999 using Audiogalaxy, no broadband them days of coarse, it was closed by the RIAA, winmx came along, still on dial-up i used to download single songs to make up albums, downloading mostly at night.

After winmx went belly up i used Shareaza and then came along BitTorrent, around 2002, anybody remember a site called Suprnova! i think it was the first BitTorrent site, it was unreal! whole albums could be downloaded!
When that site went to a arse, it was a sad day! .....but others came along and it was now time for broadband

still using bitTorrent for films, Demonoid usually! and for music, direct downloading from filehosting sites is my preferred choice,

I have never stolen anything, I wouldn't even buy any hot gear. But I pirate and I know it is wrong, I don't try to moralise it at all.

My justification is pathetic, "everyone else is doing it".

When you stream something, like watch a video on youtube, the file is downloaded onto your computer to your temporary internet folder. You can then easily save it permanently.

I do download illegally music,software,movies,Games as I'm a teenager so don't really have the money to buy thousands of songs and films. I think it's very convenient and so easy to do.I don't agree with the suggestion that it "my right" to download illegal I know it's wrong.I do however agree that it will eventually have a huge negative impact on music and film industry and it will eventually impact the cinema prices and DVD prices for those of us who do buy them .so if there is a film or album that i want to support I will buy it

especially DVDs because I'm a bit of a collector so I enjoy buying them.

I download all the time only ever buy cd's/dvd's if its something i really like and am into. Also, if it was'nt for downloading I would'nt go see half the bands I do anyone agree??

I download a good bit of music illegally. but really, i also buy far more music than anyone I know. Usually a mininum of 4 or 5 albums a month. I like to think it balances out.:o

What's the law on downloading in Ireland? Also, is it less risky to download from sites like Rapidshare, than torrents?

not that i condone it but if you think about it most people that download wouldn't have bought the item in the first place so there not really loosing out on a sale

When I can buy a licence to listen to an album and only have to buy the licence once, regardless of format, then I will (I bought LP's way back with a licence to listen to the music, then I paid for another licence with CD's as they wouldn't supply me with a CD at reduced cost minus the licence.)

When I can do the same with a game (... oh I can, I use steam. Tick for that box.)

When I can watch a movie when I want to ( about to do this apparently, plans are for a service where cinema releases can be watched online from the same date is to be rolled out this year)

So, they are getting there it seems, wp, gg.

With music, if it's by a new artist, music for charity or something like that I will pay for it, but if it's an established recording artist or from a strong record label then I won't- they don't need my money and I'm also helping them out with exposure etc so I don't feel I owe them anything.

I used to download tv shows quite a lot but stream now and only really download if I can't find a stream. I'm also watching a lot loss tv shows because there are not that many quality tv shows around anymore.

I rarely ever downloaded movies. I used to work a cinema which meant I could watch any big new films that comes out. Now I dont mind going to see a film in the cinema if I think its good enough. If I didn't think it was good enough to see in the cinema its very unlikely I'll download it. Might download the odd older movie but rarely.

I'd only download music once in a blue moon. Dont have a need for an ipod etc so dont listen to music on the go. Work at a computer all day so any music I want to listen to I can do so through youtube, grooveshark etc.

Dont play much games but would typically buy them if I really wanted one mainly because of things like online play etc. I would download software when I have the need rather than buy it. Software tends to be rather expensive and I have no real guilt in downloading it.

I also download quite a lot of academic related ebooks/articles. Primarily because I might only be interested in a very small part of a particular book and such books can be very expensive, i.e. ~ 100 euro for a book, ~25 euro for an article.

The majority of downloading I do would actually be for other people that ask me to get something for them. I have access to a private site which has a large repository of links for almost anything, it only uses filesharing sites too rather than torrents such its much easier to download.

Dishonestly obtained products are widely available online. It is really difficult to remove it and I know there are a lot of people who patronize this kind of downloading (most especially songs) because of the fact that it is free and affordable. And honestly, I did. But the government now has made a bill with regards to this matter. The SOPA bill is intended to make these materials less obtainable, a fact that customers of the Congressional web connection appear to be reacting to by downloading more unlawful material.It is meant to make copyright protections in the United States better, but there are several opponents of the bill. Some of these opponents have found that Congressional online connections have been used to download illegally acquired products.Resource for this article: Congress supports SOPA while illegally downloading self-help books
If ever this bill will be approved, they should also keep an eye with their people in the government, then it will be fair for everyone. Acquiring something that is supposed to be legal is not right but I (and I know some of you) can't resist these free stuffs.

Absolutely this. I got a brilliant collector's box set of the recent series of Doctor Who on Bluray for Christmas.

Absolutely delighted with it but every time I put a disc I have to sit through exactly 7 minutes of ****e before I even get to the menu. One of the things is simply a placard saying 'Doctor Who Series 6 Bluray Edition Disc X' with some posh English bint reading out the same text that's on the screen. It's unskippable and lasts a good fifteen seconds before it'll disappear.

WHY?! When I downloaded the 720p episodes as the show was airing at the time I didn't receive any of this absolute bull****.

There's nothing wrong with downloading. The negative stigma attached to it really stems from the big companies, primarily US based (RIAA,MPAA etc.), who refuse to adapt to changing technologies, and refuse to change their business models, and so get their good friends in Congress to bring in ridiculous laws, sue people to set an example (Jammie Thomas, anyone?), and the impending SOPA/PIPA bills to boot. The ripple effect, and America essentialy exerting peer pressure on the world, soon pushes these things across the water to us. Remember that these laws are supported by the people who also thought that vinyl, 8-track and cassettes would kill the music industry.

I have downloaded music, movies and software. Not because I wanted to steal them, but because I wasn't going to pay good money for something that I didn't know anything about. If I like the end result, invariably I buy it. If I don't, well, I was never going to buy it in the first place. Therein lies the problem. The figures the entertainment industries shout out - the 'lost revenue' - count a download as a lost sale. How many people out there will honestly say that if you couldn't download it, that you would have actually bought the product?

In a digital era, people need to broaden the scope of how to make money. DRM - doesn't work. Litigation - doesn't work. Where there is information, there will be piracy. You can't stop the revolution, so learn how to work with it. Digital media needs to be viewed a lot more as a promotional tool than the entire bottom line. You can't treat an infinite resource the same as stealing something from a shop, because it simply isn't the same.

If you think something is worth paying for, pay for it. If you don't, delete it.

But that's just my opinion
