Will you pay the property tax?

With the Irish goverment hoping to collect just under a Billion Euro with their flat rate property tax next year, I wonder will many people actually pay it?

THe government are hoping that property owners will log online and pay their tax over the internet, anyone failing to do so will have the tax added to the sale price of their home when they come to sell it.

With this stupid way of collecting money I wonder will people pay it, and will the budget fail?

Even if they had a more intelligent way of collecting this tax I still think that this tax will be FG/Labour`s version of the poll tax in the UK and people will simply refuse to pay.

Well to be honest i don't really have a clue where to start but if you could tell me how one goes about it i'll have a stab at it. i'll need some help though as i already work 40hrs a week. But lets do it!!!!!!

And people receiving Mortgage Interest Supplement. So yes, some people on the dole it seems are exempt.

I don't understand that though. My friend, when he was living here, wired up the 'joy and Arbour Hill for cable. Prison tv's are capable of receiving all UPC's basic channels.

The last time I was in the 'joy, I was forced to watch Dr. Phil on RTÉ 1. A fellow prisoner had the remote to my padded cell and told me that it was the only decent thing on.
Thankfully I was released a couple of hours later.

Not everyone on the dole claim MIR so its not true to say those on the dole are exempt.

These are some of the details of the new Household Charge or Property Tax that will be introduced as part of the 2012 Budget – from January 2012.

The 2012 charge will be €100 a year – but it will be increased in 2013
Property Owners not occupiers will be liable for the charge. Tenants will not have to pay it.

Billing: No bills for this household charge will be sent – the charge will be on a self declaration basis. Registration and payment can be carried out online when the HouseholdCharge.ie website is up and running.

The Household Charge is an interim measure to be put in place until a full property tax system is worked out.

The liability date will be January 2012 and households will have three months to pay. Late payment penalties will apply of €10 a month.

If charges remain unpaid a charge will remain attached to the property – if a property is sold the new owner becomes liable for outstanding monies.

Registration for the charge will be done either online or by post. Payers will be able to pay a one off payment online or by post or spread the payment quarterly by direct debit .

The following properties are exempt from the Household Charge :
1. Properties that are part of the trading stock of a business (not sold or not generating an income );

2. Properties owned by local authoritie and approved non-profit housing bodies and rented as “social housing”

3. Property Owned by Government/HSE;

4. Properties Owned by a Charity;

5. Properties where commercial rates apply;

6. Properties where a person is forced to leave their house due to long-term mental or physical infirmity (elderly person that has moved into a nursing home).
The following households will have the charge waived :

1. Those in receipt of mortgage interest supplement (i.e on very low incomes)

2. Those in certain category 3 and 4 unfinished housing estates (Estimated to be less than 400 estates)
Category 3 is where a receiver has not been appointed and the developer is still in place but effectively inactive . Category 4 is where the development has been effectively abandoned and is posing serious problems for residents .
(No mention of mobile home owners not being liable yet)

I'll be paying it. Anything that gets this country up and running again can only be a good thing for my future too.

Besides, I get tax relief on my mortgage every month so 1 TRS covers property tax for year.

I just hope they don't increase employees tax/prsi/usc aswell. People need the incentive to stay working or want to work.

+ I pay enough to fund high public sector pay and pensions. Some public sector pensions are over 120,000 per year. They should cut those before I give the government another cent.

amazing...firstly they think as per usual for progressives that a tax will bring in what they expect....it never does and is designed that way. thats how they will justify the increase next year. if you honestly believe this is for debt payments you honestly need to read up on how governments work. they dont want to ever pay that off...its a control mechanism on you to keep you in perpetual crisis.

of course that wont bring in the expected revenues either...and guess what this is designed that way as well.

Is this the only solution this brain dead government can come up with?

Firstly the income levy was imposed which was upped to the USC.
Private pension levy put on pensions worth fcuk all.
Vat going up 2%.
Household charge in 2012, increasing in 2013.
The few tax reliefs we had are being eroded.

All this while our wages are being cut drastically and the cost of utilities continue to rise.

Will the loss of revenue from closed down retail outlets, pubs, cafes, businesses and services (which is an un-reported epidemic) be worth the extra tax take?

Are they considering the consequences of this, the loss to the state of direct revenue from council rates, personal and business taxes.
Indirect revenue from rent, insurance, energy, suppliers etc.
Couple this with inevitable increased social welfare payments.

This is leaving aside the huge burden of mortgages on individuals which will be made worse by all this.

Why not cut the scandelous waste in the relevent government departments and leave people with a few bob to spend and circulate a bit of business.

The idea behind the current set up, regardless of who is in government, is to protect those already working in the public sector (which includes themselves). I happily pay for nurses,gardai etc...but when i hear friends tell me they are literally bored out of their minds getting paid to sit at desks doing nothing with pension plans that i cannot afford to pay for (but am anyway-i just pay for theirs instead of my own)...its tough and grating.
The current set up is a scam. Its designed to cripple the vast majority of us to ensure a few hundred thousand get through as comfortably as possible. In case anyone did not read the small print about the recent announcements regarding cutting the public sector, here it is: There will be no forced redundancies

Same old Ireland, protect a few at any cost to the rest.

I'd be interested to know if there is a group set up to oppose this. Mass refusal to pay is as strong a protest as can be made. I personally think its abhorrent.
The one thing that most families work towards is the security of owning their own house... now if you can't come up with a lump sum every year they can take your house away? The whole thing makes me very angry.
