Removing moss from tarmac?

Anyone have suggestions or recommendations for getting rid or moss from a tarmac drive. I have tried a couple of different cans of liquid "moss killer" and to be honest they didnt work too well.

Know anyone milking near you or with a pool?
If you can get some granular chlorine then thats the stuff to use.
Wet the area, sprinkle the granules on and work them in with a brush.
Wait for an hour or two and rinse it off or just leave it to dry(if it is able to dry here).
Chlorine will kill moss and algae no problem.
Bleach works but isn't as strong.

The girlfriend's grandmother has just covered her tarmac driveway in washing detergent (bold, persil stuff). Think she just bought a load of cheap stuff. Sounds crazy and I've no idea where she heard of this or if it works. But it looks like a pretty christmas scene. I'll let ya know if it works.

Jayes fluid should get rid of it, don't use too much though.

Thats daft. most detergents have high levels of phosphates which are basically fertilisers.
Algae and moss love fertilisers.:D

I have heard that too - I don't mind the smell of Jeyes fluid - however others do - so you might not have any visitors for Christmas - other than the guy who comes down the chimney

washing detergent will kill the moss just used it last week. any cheap brand will do. you will see difference after 24 hrs

Have a think about what the intended use for each chemical is.

Detergent: breaks down grease and oils into soluble form so your plates are clean. Phosphate based.

Chlorine: kills algal and bacterial growth in swimming pools and milking parlours. Sodium Hypochlorite base.

I leave it to you to experiment away.;)

Phosphate of iron kills moss. I have used it to kill moss on a pebble driveway (also great in grass) . Moss turns black after a couple of days and dies off. Have not tried it on tarmac. It comes as a powder and you sprinkle it directly on to the moss. Available in Donegal Creameries.

Also got a moss problem on my driveway and I was reading elsewhere that this is one to avoid if you have a tarmac drive as the phosphate of iron will leave brown streaks that never come off.

Copper Sulphate also known as Bluestone kills moss, lasts for up to two years.

Is the organic treatment for potato blight and fire blight on apple,
pear and cherry trees.

Can be bought at agri merchants, they'll give you a tub that costs approx
20 euro but will last for a 100 years when applied at 3% a litre once a year
to average 3 bed semi driveway.

It comes as a blue powder.

Dissolve the amount you're going to use
in hot water and transfer it to a watering
can/sprayer. Watering can is easier and
faster for around the house.

Zinc Sulphate known as white vittrol will also
do the trick, it's used in animal footbaths.

The Zinc is probably better for most people
as it comes in smaller quantities and can be
bought in (most) pharmacies
I bought 1kg before Christmas for €4.

Been using Lidil Washing Powder for several years, just sprinkle it over the moss before rain and it will kill it in a couple of days. Works every time and is by far the cheapest method.

Done the same a couple of times over the last 3 or 4 years with the cheap Lidl washing powder and it works fine. However I bought a box of Asda branded powder and put it down a couple of days ago and it seems to have turned the tarmac a bit grey here and there. It hasnt stayed dry long enough (too many showers) to get a decent view of the whole driveway but I'll post back the next time we get a dry day or two.

Haven't logged in for ages and this is at the top of My Threads

Bluestone will not stain, I guestimate using a laundry scoop, so a 5% mix at most. Used on both concrete and tarmac.

Difference is a 1 litre / 1 kg mix costs 15c instead of €1.60-€2.00 / 1 kg for cheapest detergent just sprinkled, makes a difference if you've a big area to do like I have. The Zinc works out at about 25c (10% - footbath mix) a litre and is friendlier to the environment.

If you only want to spend pennies and have a small area to do try Tesco's 75c a litre Pine disinfectant neat. Works good as an Algecide, quick too, one day and the green slime will be hammered, hits the moss too but not quite as well.

I'll throw up some before and after pictures later if I still have them

We sell a masonry biocide in work ( not allowed advertise it here ) and it works very well on removing moss from tarmac. The only thing is that after application the moss turns brown and needs to be flushed out of the porous tarmac crevices. The biocide does not leave any residual stains on tarmac etc the way other chemicals like chlorus would. It's a more expensive option but the results are pretty impressive.

Tarmacked Areas:
Dilute 125ml Jeyes Fluid to 5 litres of water in a watering can, then apply sufficient solution to thoroughly wet the affected surfaces. Firstly, make sure to check a small area for softening. If the tarmacked area softens, use a lower dilution of 60ml product to 5 litres of water and repeat treatment 1 month later.
