Do people become Monks/Nuns nowdays?

I know theres a shortage of priest,but does anyone join these now days?Someone told me a lot of widowers in later life become monks.Never heard of anyone becoming a nun?.
It would make a great TV programme,celebs becoming Monks:D.

No bills,free accommodation and food.Some monasteries make their own beer/wine................So free beer.
A few years back,i visited Assisi in Italy,a few of the monks seemed to be hippy americans.

Anyone ever think about it?.

My uncle has recently become a monk. Over in France. Now a missionary in Christchurch after a stint in the Phillippines and india

ah yeah but you would have to pray and meditate and be holy and care about your fellow man or at least pretend to etc

I'll be honest, none of these things are my strong points.....and I wouldnt be able to keep up the charade.....if some beatific monk reminded me gently about morning prayers at some ungodly hour I'd probably tell him where to go.

They are probably brewing it....monks are a great bunch of lads for that...relieves the boredom.

I work in an abbey, there's no monks under the age of 70. I think there was a big group living there years ago but there's only around 12 of them still alive.

There was a nunnery in my home town back in the day. There was a big open garden that wasn't protected by any wall or anything, no security. One day, the local radio were reporting about one of the nun's going missing.

It was always my backup plan,that If I ever ended up homeless I would join a monastery that brewed beer.;)

i stayed in a monestry in bulgaria for two years living with monks the peace and solitude was fantastic thats what i wanted in my life at that time it probabley wouldent be for everyone but i enjoyed it unfortunatley due to circumstances i had to come home but they left it open to me to come back anytime which i will do when the time is right

Back in the day he would have been a good man for it. He's now late 40s (touchin 50) and very devout. The demon dhrink is a thing of the past!
