I'm still absolutely delighted that Michael D won the day. He was the only candidate who really seemed to understand what the job entailed and I don't think anyone can deny the man has an unrivaled knowledge of the constitution. Besides that, he's a thoroughly decent man with a great love of the country. He will bring passion and pride to the country.

I was really hoping Norris would at least get 4th; before this morning I thought he'd be up there with McGuinness fighting for third. Alas it was not to be.
I'm delighted for President elect Higgins and he will be a wonderful president for our country. But if Norris finishes behind Mitchell it will put a dampener on it for me.

Doubt it.. I reckon the decision to bring up Gallagher's lies was made because they'd rather see Higgins as president and at the time Gallagher was favorite to win. I really don't think there was any expectation that McGuinness' vote would improve.

Whatever the reasons for it were, I for one am glad they scuppered Gallagher's chances. Much happier to see Higgins win.

Higgins: 730,480 votes (+29,379); Gallagher 529,401 (+24,437); McGuinness 252,611 (+9,581); Mitchell 127,357 (+14,036); Norris 116,526 (+7,057)
The quota is 885,882.

I think Mitchell and Norris votes can be counted together as both don't add up to McGuinness's vote, not sure though.

It mightn't need McGuinness to elect Higgins if he does very well from transfers, possible from a Norris and FG vote, I'd say it'll still need a McGuinness count.

It's the party political association, no matter how dire Mitchell was, he's more transferable than McGuinness eg.!

The FG vote not voting Mitchell was going Gallagher and then Higgins after the collapse, it wont go near McGuinness, Norris the same, though far more Higgins.

Thinking about it, we wont need to count the McGuinness vote, his vote wont matter, which is pretty poor, no matter how the Shinners spin it!

Good enough result. We will have an inoffensive little President who probably won the day because he annoyed fewer people than the other candidates. I just hope he doesn't see it as a mandate to start spouting his crap poetry in public.

My main reason to be happy is that SF, despite running their highest profile candidate, failed to make much of an impression. Their much heralded breakthrough into mainstream southern politics shows no sign of happening any time soon.

He made an impression and his high profile?, sure Haughey was high profile for FF, transfer toxic though.

Mitchell is getting more transfers, that's how transfer toxic McGuinness is.

Transfer are key in PR, it's why FF ended up with 20 seats and Labour 37 with not that much of a vote difference.
